As the airport operator announced Wednesday evening, 2.32 million passengers flew from Zurich Airport in September. That was about 68 percent more than in the same month last year.
However, the pre-pandemic level has not yet been reached. About 20 percent fewer passengers traveled at Zurich Airport last month than in September 2019.
Last month, the number of flights increased by 29 percent compared to the previous year and reached 20,724 take-offs and landings. On average, there were 134 passengers per flight, which is 15 percent more than the previous year. Meanwhile, seat occupancy rose 11 points to 82 percent in the month under review.
The increased number of passengers also reflected positively on store sales at the airport. Commercial sales rose almost 46 percent to CHF 49.1 million in September. Airside shops, that is, shops that passed security checks, increased their sales by around 57 percent. Shops in the public area of the airport made around 35 percent more turnover.
On the other hand, the freight, which was already high during the crisis period, did not increase further. A total of 32,886 tons of cargo was handled at Zurich Airport. This was 4 percent less than in the same month last year. Compared to September 2019, 10 percent less cargo was handled.
