Former figure skater Roman Kostomarov had both feet amputated. The trigger for this was pneumonia, the course of which made the operation inevitable. “The operation went without incident, the body is recovering,” a relative of Kostomarov told the Russian news agency TASS.

His condition after the operation was good given the circumstances, but he has not yet completely overcome the health problems. The operation took place on January 24. “Now we are fighting to save his hands,” the relative continued.

According to the Italian sports newspaper “Gazzetta dello Sport”, Kostomarov was admitted to a hospital in Moscow a month ago. Since then his health deteriorated rapidly. As a result, an artificial coma followed and he was placed on a heart-lung machine. Because there was a risk that body parts would die, the doctors decided to amputate Kostomarov’s feet.

The cause of the pneumonia is still unclear. As international media report, Kostomarov had contracted a corona infection. Another figure skater, Maksim Staviski, denied these rumors. “During his performance he was coughing, but he didn’t have a fever, so he didn’t seek help. There was nothing wrong at the time,” he told Russian news site sports.ru. His father, on the other hand, confirmed to the news site: “It’s probably the corona virus.”

At the 2006 Olympics, the figure skater won the gold medal with his ice partner Tatjana Nawka. In 2004, Kostomarov also became world champion in Dortmund.
