Vegans are less likely to get Corona

Various studies suggest that diet plays a crucial role in corona infections. Now a new study from the University of São Paulo has shown that a vegan diet can reduce the risk of corona infection.

The researchers divided the 702 subjects into different groups:

Between March and July 2022, the research team investigated how diet influences a corona infection. The results have now been published in the journal BMJ Nutrition, Prevention and Health.

The result: People who eat more plant-based diets, such as vegetarians or flexitarians, had a 39 percent lower risk of getting COVID compared to omnivores.

The research team concludes:

“Our results suggest that a plant-based diet and a predominantly vegetarian diet may be considered to protect against infection with COVID-19.”

The authors assume that this is related to the immune-boosting properties of the vegan diet. The immune system needs a sufficient amount of antioxidant enzymes, vitamins and peptides, which are abundant in plant foods.

A 2020 US study came to a similar conclusion, surveying people from six countries (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Britain and the US). According to the research, a plant-based diet can help reduce the risk of moderate to severe corona infection. (cst)
