New antibiotic could work against resistant bacteria

A new class of antibiotics has shown promising results in initial studies against an antibiotic-resistant bacterium. However, the active substance that researchers at the pharmaceutical company Roche in Basel have developed is still far from being used in practice.

According to the study published Wednesday in the journal Nature, the newly developed active ingredient zosurabalpine worked in the laboratory and in mice against the antibiotic-resistant bacterium Acinetobacter baumannii – a typical hospital germ that can cause pneumonia.

“Any new class of antibiotics that can treat infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria such as carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii would be a major breakthrough,” said Roche’s Michael Lobritz, who was involved in the study, when asked by Keystone News Agency -SDA announces this.

However, further research is needed to know whether zosurabalpine will make this breakthrough.
