Sir Mayer, your brand is relatively new to watches and jewelry, although the company has been around since the 19th century. Why did it happen?
My ancestor Bernhard Mayer, who founded the engraving workshop in 1871, made his name famous for his fine filigree work in the production of coins, the quality of which was appreciated by representatives of royal families.
The family workshop was engaged in minting money and even had the status of an official mint. It turns out that we initially gained reputation and fame in a completely different market. Although the studio has been dedicated to precious jewelry almost since the day it was founded, since it appeared in Pforzheim, Germany. Since the 18th century, this city has been considered one of the largest European centers of jewelry art.
Today, the company is run by the fifth generation of the dynasty. And all the while, the Mayer family continues to be trusted to produce coins and prestigious awards. Commemorative coins by Bernhard H. Mayer are highly valued by numismatists.
And in 1980, we launched our first own Swiss watch model – thus began the factory’s rise to the watch market.

Two years ago, the large-scale factory celebrated its 150th anniversary. The release of the 150th Anniversary watch collection was timed to coincide with this event. Did buyers like it?
Without false modesty, I will say that today almost every work of Bernhard H. Mayer – both watches and jewelry – becomes a hit.
Of course, the choice of materials and the art of execution play a big role here. But let’s not forget that all products are limited edition, and this is really important for connoisseurs.

As a result, we have decided to implement the practice of pre-ordering watches, as other brands do, and start production of a certain batch of watches only after customers express a desire to purchase them.
The 150th Anniversary Chronometers were offered to customers in two versions – 750 rose gold plated and steel. Uses durable 316L stainless steel, which is said to be both medical grade and jewelry grade. It is a hypoallergenic material that is resistant to corrosion as well as sunlight and sea water. The alloy does not oxidize, so products are protected from defects for many decades.
The 150th anniversary has become not only another proof of the Mayer dynasty’s great love for Swiss quality, but also embodies the history of the brand. On the case you can see the cartographic outline of the brand’s homeland, the city of Pforzheim, and on the dial – a coin. These details recall the beginnings of Bernhard H. Mayer’s craftsmanship.
Acknowledging that success is always inspiring, the excitement surrounding the release of our anniversary watch inspired us to create the Wave Breaker.

The task was to make such a watch, with which it is not scary to dive to a depth of 2000 meters. They should not only emphasize style and status, like other watch products of the brand, but also ensure the safety of their owner – and literally climb out of the water.
That’s why we’ve protected the Wave Breaker from extreme water pressure with a helium escape valve, screw-down case back, and shatter-resistant sapphire crystal. Illuminated indexes on the dial allow you to use all the functionality of the accessories even in reduced visibility and lighting conditions. And I am very glad that the divers appreciated the watch by voting for the novelty with their orders.
Which Bernhard H. Mayer products are handmade?
Absolutely all of our watches are examples of hand-crafted craftsmanship – as are some of the jewelery collections. This of course adds value to them. Bernhard H. Mayer uses only 750 gold, which is ethically sourced from the Council for Responsible Jewelry Practices, so-called ethical gold. This is our principled position. Since we have been working with this precious metal for a century and a half, we are well aware of the damage that its mining causes to the environment. Mercury is still used in some mines, which seriously damages human health in direct contact and also remains in the environment, contaminating water bodies and their inhabitants. We refuse to work with such raw materials.

It is worth noting that most of the gold on the planet has already been mined. Since the beginning of the 21st century, about 30% of the “solar” metal in production has been recycled gold.
Does gold jewelry turn out to be more and more valuable every year?
But not only because of the material. We use this precious metal exclusively because we aim to create “eternal” things that will be passed down from generation to generation. The same can be said about the stones that decorate our products. It is primarily about diamonds, because in combination with gold – in any design – they remain timeless and fashionable.

I love all our jewelry because the artisans put all their experience and effort into it. But I like the tanzanite collection the most.
The Timeless Tanzanite Collection is the brand’s first collection based on a unique mineral mined from the only deposit in the world at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest stratovolcano in northeastern Tanzania.

I am fascinated by its alexandrite effect: the shade of the stone changes depending on the angle of the light. The color of the tanzanite reverse varies from purple to blue. Its other properties are also impressive: according to the Mohs scale, a ten-point scale of relative hardness of minerals, the hardness of tanzanite reaches 7. It was difficult to pass this stone and not take it as the basis of a jewelry collection. All because we create collectibles that can be passed down to their descendants. That’s why we choose materials that will look perfect both years and centuries later.
