Diana called this picture the Elvis dress – for what? Fashion

Today, images of Princess Diana have become classics.

The black “revenge dress” is iconic, cycling shorts and a sweatshirt are perfect for casual wear, a sweater with sheep is the best option in autumn. And at the time when the princess lived, not all her ascents were considered successful. Former Vanity Fair editor Tina Brown said, “In the early ’80s, she was wrong as often as she was right.” The princess herself calmly admitted her mistakes and even laughed at them, for example with the pearl dress, which she called Elvis.

This design for Diana was developed by fashion designer Katherine Walker. She decorated the finest snow-white silk with a sprinkling of medium-sized pearls of a noble milk shade, added a short jacket to it, and advised the princess to complete the ensemble with the famous Knots of Love tiara. The silk and pearls were meant to be a tribute to Chinese culture during Lady Di’s visit to China.

But fashion critics did not like this combination, and according to legend, the princess herself laughed when she tried on the dress: “It looks like Elvis!” Due to the stiff collar, there were indeed direct associations with the king of rock and roll, although this did not stop Diana and she still went out in a pearl outfit. But then she didn’t wear it and years later she decided to put it in a charity auction. Christie’s curator Meredith Etherington-Smith recalled Prince William pleading with Diana: “Mum, this is too terrible to sell.”
