Artist Dominique White announced that she will receive the ninth Max Mara Art Prize for Women during a special ceremony at the Whitechapel Gallery on 28 March 2023, co-hosted by Gilane Tawadros (Director Whitechapel Gallery) and Luigi Maramotti (CEO Max Mara Fashion Group srl). And for Dominique, this news was, of course, a greater honor: this award is given to the author of the most outstanding artistic project that passed the test of criticism by an authoritative jury.

But further – more. As the winner, White will now travel to Italy for a six-month individual internship to realize her creative vision, which was approved by the jury. Once completed, the project will be presented in a major solo exhibition in 2024, first at the Whitechapel Gallery and then at the Collezione Maramotti in Reggio Emilia, Italy.

“I am thrilled to be the recipient of this award, which not only allows you to develop seemingly unattainable skills and bold research topics, but also (literally) encourages the creation of new work,” says Dominik. Her creative idea – a piece called Deadweight – is a truly complex mix of artistic, political, social and cultural issues facing society today.

During her internship, Dominique will study “dead weight” in the context of the historical slave trade and its current forms in the Mediterranean, as well as visit shipyards to explore the forms of ships through which she often conveys her ideas. The artist will be interesting: at the end of the work, she is going to submerge parts of it in the waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea off the west coast of Italy – we will be watching this performance and sincerely wish Dominique success!
