Fashion I want to write a book, but I don’t know how: 10 tips for the aspiring writer

Tip 1. Answer the question: why am I writing this book?

Just be honest. And it’s better to write this answer down. It makes you understand how and where to move. It will help to draw up a plan of action and not leave the book in the process.

Tip 2: Treat writing a book like a project

Writing a book is a creative process, but unless you plan to make it your life’s work, you’ll need to bring planning, rationality, and pragmatism to it. Especially if you count on popularity with readers, or publishing a book is important to your career.

Set a goal, divide the process into stages and create an action plan and deadlines for each of them.

Tip 3. Research publishers and self-publishing services

Check who publishes books on similar topics. How do these publishers stack up? Will the samizdata service fulfill all your plans? Will having a book published by this particular publisher help you achieve your goals? If possible, talk to those who have already published the book in your chosen way to find out what it’s really like.

Tip 4: Research the competing writers and their books

There are probably many books on the topic you have chosen. Understanding what you are offering the reader will help create a truly unique book. And the experiences of other authors will be the starting point in the action plan or just inspire.

Tip 5. Write a synopsis

This is essential if you plan to submit your manuscript to a publisher. We will have to think through every block of this document to increase the chances of publication. But in any case, working on a synopsis will help to gather thoughts about the book and focus on the main thing.

By the way, feel free to send the synopsis to several (appropriate!) publishers at once. This will save you a lot of time and give you a choice.

Tip 6. Talk about writing a book

Friends, subscribers and anyone who is interested. A public pledge will help prevent the book from being abandoned in the process. It is useful to publish short excerpts from the manuscript to get feedback and gauge reader interest. If readers are waiting for the next passage, it will be extremely difficult to leave the book.

Tip 7. Give the process regularity

Experiment and choose the time when you write best. Book it in your book work schedule. Do not take long breaks between approaches to the manuscript, so as not to lose interest and motivation to continue. But don’t forget to rest!

Tip 8. Create a place for creativity

Not everyone has access to a private office or lakeside cabin. But a cozy place to help you engage with the process and create will add variety to the writing process. Here, too, it is necessary to experiment. First, remove anything that may distract from the process. If you’re having trouble deciding, find out how and where your favorite writers preferred to write.

Tip 9. Be patient and love yourself

Books are rarely written quickly. And in the process, inner fear and criticism, impostor syndrome and an unjustified desire for perfectionism are easily awakened. Be understanding: you have taken on an important and difficult task.

At times like these, it’s simply helpful to remember why you’re writing this book and how it will change the lives of readers. And yours.

Tip 10: Build a support group

Find people who believe in you and will believe in your book. For example, friends, colleagues or mother. Their main job is to praise and support you in moments of self-loathing and that’s it. It is useful to communicate with other writers, beginners and more. This will help you not feel alone in your problems. Elegant and practical advice – how to solve them.
