What happens if you don’t buy new clothes for a whole year: an experiment by a Fashion stylist

“What can I say: clothes were my great love,” admits Lauren. For about 15 years she worked (and still works) in the fashion industry, was a columnist in glossy magazines and a stylist – and also often (even very often) visits clothing stores on duty. Work gradually crossed the border with personal life, and Lauren began to look at boutiques not only for work, but also just for fun.

The stylist noticed something was wrong as she stood in front of the huge wardrobe again, still exasperated, “I have nothing to wear.” And when I started to find myself wanting to buy something new just for the mood, otherwise it’s stress. In general, shopping to improve your mood is not a bad idea. But not if it turns into a bad habit and runs into finances.

“Over the years, clothes have been my comfort blanket and boosted my confidence. They were a hobby, a competitive sport and a way to connect with people,” admits Bravo. And at the same time, shopping has become a new way to “bust” stress, to take a break from burning problems, with which the fashion expert decided to fight radically – on New Year’s Eve, when she promised herself not to buy new clothes for 12 months. .

“To be clear, I haven’t stopped shopping completely,” says Lauren. She sometimes supplemented her wardrobe with finds from vintage shops, which she could not tear away from her heart after filming, but she did not consider them a “bad habit”. The purpose of the experiment was to fight fast fashion – Bravo rejected such fashion.

So what has changed in a year?

  • “I let go of the fear of decorating my rooms. It wasn’t until I stopped shopping that I realized how much self-loathing was behind those curtains. It feels bad,” says Lauren. And here is the first plus of the shopping detox – the stress in fitting rooms no longer concerns you.
  • “I’ve learned layering,” the stylist continues. “If I used to just use it as a technique, now I’ve started using it almost every day. And the images only benefited from it. Fitted turtlenecks for summer overalls, shirts for short-sleeved sweaters, sweaters over a dress – comfortable.
  • “Sharing and borrowing from friends is a secret weapon that most of us hardly use,” says Bravo. “We started changing clothes more often and I tell you it’s a lot of fun.
  • “I stopped racking my brain when I was standing at the closet. Repeating successful combinations frees the mind, you know for sure that you look good and unusual. After all, you didn’t just buy a new sweater of the same type, but you made an unusual combination with the old one,” says Lauren .
  • “I no longer treat my nerves by shopping online before bed,” says the stylist. I really don’t need a new purse and it’s just a rough day.”

To be honest, we note: the British experiment did not end with a happy ending and a complete rejection of fast fashion and shopping runs. Bravo believes that this is a great step towards a more conscious approach to your wardrobe, a good test for bad habits – by fundamentally giving up impulse shopping, you will understand when you really need a new thing to refresh your look, and when you are just distracting from real problems .
