How to choose a jacket that fits your figure well - main rules and tips

In modern brands, you can find about a million jackets – and each option has a right to exist. But that doesn’t mean you can just walk into a store and five minutes later walk out with the perfect purchase. No, you’ll have to look for a really good jacket that fits your figure – but trust me, it’s worth it!

Therefore, we decided to go through the main criteria that these “ideal” jackets meet and repeat them with you. Remember the simple rules: they will help us find a model that will suit you.

Shoulders

If you are looking for a basic classic jacket, then first of all pay attention to the shoulder line. The seam connecting the sleeve and the main “body” of the jacket should run exactly along the shoulder joint. If you choose a model where the seam reaches the forearm, it means that your jacket is too big, if the seam is closer to the neck, the jacket is too small.

Width

Button up your jacket and try to put your hand under it. Does it fit easily? Great, that means the jacket fits. Now open it up and take a closer look at where the folds end – they should cover a quarter of the body on either side.

Buttons

Double-breasted jackets look more formal, so for everyday wear we would consider a single-breasted version. If you’re trying a one-button model, make sure it’s above the navel but below the solar plexus – this will keep the proportions of the silhouette.

If your jacket has two buttons, one should be above the navel and the other just below the chest. It is important that the jacket does not “shrink” when buttoned – waves and gathering indicate that it is poorly cut. And in this case, no matter what someone says, a harmonious look will not work – and this option does not suit us!
