How to wear trousers when you are over 50: advice from stylists Fashion

The attitude towards this wardrobe has changed dramatically. For example, jeans, which were once considered casual clothing, have become appropriate for the office, and models that until recently were only worn by women for business meetings are now seen on red carpets and parties.

Pants are an integral part of every “capsule”. Which should you choose if you are 50 or older? Here’s what stylists think about it.

The main requirement is a high landing

As stylist Elizabeth Kosich explains, when putting together an outfit, you need to follow the rule of thirds – visually, the silhouette must be divided into three parts, one of which should be at the top, two at the bottom. We subconsciously consider this proportion to be ideal – it elongates and even slims the figure.

According to Elizabeth, the rule of thirds will automatically apply if you wear high-waisted pants. So that they don’t disturb the desired separation, complement them with a cropped sweater or a tucked-in blouse or a high-quality plain T-shirt – for example, white, dark gray, dark blue or black.

Choose a durable fabric…

Stylist and image consultant Andy Sobrato advises to pay attention to what material the pants are made of – they should be durable, comfortable and impressive. In particular, Andy advises to pay attention to ponte – double knit, which thanks to its density perfectly holds its shape and at the same time, because it is elastic, does not restrict movement. “Ponte pants are as comfortable as leggings, but they also provide support for parts of the body that sometimes make us feel insecure,” says Sobrato.

…or very light

We wear trousers not only in autumn and winter – in summer and late spring, according to Kosich, light trousers with wide legs are ideal for women over fifty. “If you have broad shoulders and a large bust, choose styles with pleats, and if you have wide hips, choose styles without pleats,” advises Elizabeth.

Think about the “right” shoes

When it comes to pants, it can make a big difference. Stylist Hallie Abrams advises pairing a narrow pair with heels or ballet flats, and a wide pair with something bulkier and to balance the look — like loafers, chunky sneakers, or boots.

Track the landing

In your 50s, your figure can change – menopause often brings with it extra pounds that accumulate around the waist. Therefore, explains Kosich, it is very important at this age to critically evaluate your favorite things: if the pants are tight or have a “doughnut effect” at the waist, you either need to change them or take them to a tailor and have them altered.
