New in theaters today: FSK 18 horror shocker, Stephen King horror hype and one of the best Marvel movies ever

Time and time again there are weeks in which several exciting reboots play in cinemas, including this Thursday. Ideally, of course, you will be drawn to several movies at once (after all, nothing beats the cinema experience). If this is not possible for you due to time or other reasons, we will provide you the three biggest reboots as of today June 1, 2023 below to make your decision a little easier…

Multiverse Madness “Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse”

Our favorite reboot of the week is definitely the highly anticipated Marvel animated adventure, Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse. The Oscar-winning predecessor wowed us in 2018 with its impressive style, bombastic action and a playful multiverse story full of humor and heart. And the sequel goes (at least) one step further.

When Miles Morales (original voice: Shameik Moore) and Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) find themselves once again ensnared in the tangle of the demented multiverse, whose stability is threatened more than ever, an even bigger and more creative firework of various Spider-People ensues. and Easter follows Eggs without compromising the story, which is as captivating as it is gripping. For what we consider the best multiverse movie to date, we’re giving our review a well-deserved 4.5 out of 5 stars alongside “Everything Everywhere All At Once” (which also makes it one of the best Marvel movies ever).

Horror highlight “Pearl”

Director Ti West (“The Sacrament”, “The Innkeepers”) presented with ‘X’ one of THE horror highlights of the year 2022, before the release of which he made a surprising announcement at the time: at that time he secretly already had a prequel recorded called “Pearl”, which finally starts in German cinemas with some delay – and the “X” is in no way inferior.

In his origin story about the eponymous killer (Mia Goth), of “X” fame, whose failed attempts to become movie stars in the post-World War I era finally drive her to brutal acts, Ti West not only delivers more of the same, but stylistically completely different genre gem.

In the conclusion of our 4-star review, we describe “Pearl”, which again rightly only appears from the age of 18, as “a visually stunning, highly entertaining grotesque horror about the shattering of the American Dream starring Mia Goth in the lead role. ”. And if after “Pearl” you still can’t get enough of the fledgling “X” franchise, you can look forward to the sequel “MaXXXine”, which has not yet been released in theaters.

Really too scary? “The Bogeyman”

On the other hand, we can’t recommend the second horror start of the week so unreservedly. In the run-up to the filming of a Stephen King short story, quite a bit of hype flared up as a scene reportedly had to be changed because it was said to be too scary. So, is The Boogeyman really the scariest movie of the year? Sadly not, the creeper ends up losing itself in too many cheesy jump scares and an unnecessarily action-packed finale, as our 2.5 star review says.

Until then, the story of a family suffering from the sudden accidental death of the mother, who is one day haunted by an evil shadowy figure, offers some pretty chilling horror entertainment and thrilling psychological approaches to dealing with grief-so inclined genre friends. despite the weak second half, feel free to take a look.
