Clint Eastwood celebrated 93 years of work

The American legend of westerns, classics, tireless filmmaker, winner of the Oscar and the Palme d’Or in Cannes, turns 93 today, May 31, and he celebrated them with a new project behind and in front of the cameras.

“Color your village and you will color the world,” says the saying. What will bring a man, a figure who is a a living legendto continue working, to continue with challenges year after year, after he has completed 50 years of directorship and that’s it 70 as an artist?

Actor, director, screenwriter, producer, musicalizer and various skills more than they could turn him into a renaissance artist, a man who is a symbol of generosity, trajectory, legend, who is not exempt from controversy, given the time he spent in politics: as when he was the mayor of his town of Carmel -a bucolic redoubt in California on the Pacific coast-, or in some campaigns of the Republican Party. He was remembered when in 2012 he spoke to an empty chair at a party meeting that symbolized Barack Obama on his way to re-election. At the time, he was accused of being too old to develop these jokes, although the president “fired back” with a photo of himself on Twitter with the sentence “this chair is already taken”.

Clint Eastwood is a guarantee of quality, good classic cinematography. After debut on the big screen, at the age of 25, was forged in Almeria, Spain, under the direction of Sergio Leone and his famous “Spaghetti Western”. It still didn’t stop.

He turns 93, with enviable vitality, which he demonstrated amid the pandemic when he starred in and directed a delayed script about a veteran former rodeo star who had to save his ex-boss’s son by moving to Mexico. “Cry Macho” is the name of that film which premiered in 2021, just in time for the 50th anniversary of his first directorial film: “Play Misty For Me”.

A new project was recently announced, which will be his 40th directing job, and which he will film in a few months. It would arrive in cinemas at the end of this year and would be called “Jury number 2”. His argument is about a jury embroiled in a murder trial and faced with the moral dilemma of not doing wrong without being implicated. The hero’s path and redemption, such lovely arguments Eastwood. And with reminiscences, this time also about Hitchcock. The screenwriter is Jonathan Abrams, as well as “Escape Impossible”, which in 2013 gathered no less than Stallone and Schwarzenegger.

The film will act Toni Collette, Nicholas Hoult (The two shared a bill as mother and son in 2002’s “Un Gran Chico,” alongside Hugh Grant). Kiefer Sutherland will also participate.

Eastwood will reserve a small role for himself, although this time he will not be the absolute protagonist as in “mule” – maybe his last big movie? – and in “Cry Macho”. The latter was a public failure that was not accompanied by specialized criticism.

New times are blowing in Warner, where Eastwood they have been together since their first movie. Nevertheless, he got the green light for this new film, after big successes like “The Unforgivables”, “The Bridges of Madison”, “Million Dollar Baby” and the highest grosser of his career with Bradley Cooper, “Sniper” 2014: True the story of the deadliest seal in his country. It cost 60 million and earned 550 worldwide. Being an American blockbuster.

That phrase attributed to artists about muses: “I hope it’s inspiration find a job”, could be applied to the great Eastwood, behind whom there is always a great script and a classic story. Tirelessly and stubbornly forward.

Perhaps there is no other way, to follow a passion that has taken your whole life, inspired several generations and influenced many modern filmmakers, including some who even worked with him, like himself. Bradley Cooper, the protagonist of “Sniper”, who also had a role in “La Mula”, and whose successful directorial debut was the film “A Star is Born” in 2018, together with Lady Gaga, a film that Eastwood I had intended to do this a few years earlier. No doubt, the student learned from the teacher.

A new film is expected in a few months Cooper as a director and actor, a biographical film to be called “Maestro”, about Leonard Bernstein, the great North American composer of hits like “West Side Story”.

Others you haven’t worked with Eastwood, but his career as a leading man, then as a screenwriter and director – he won an Oscar for both fields – is very similar, that’s Ben Affleck. Whose films “Gone One Night” and “Living at Night”, even “Argo” itself, are in the line of the best Clint. The first two share the same original author of the novel-to-film adaptation, as Dennis Lehane is the screenwriter of “Rio Místico,” another of Eastwood’s well-remembered 2003 films.

Clint, he doesn’t stop and goes for more. Theirs fans around the world they look forward to it.
