It’s finally beautiful – and barbecue season can begin. But is your device really ready? Or did it disappear straight into the basement after last use? The grill must be clean not only for hygiene reasons, but also for optimum function. It will also last longer if you maintain it once or twice a year. Here are six things to keep in mind when you start grilling. Don’t worry: it doesn’t take much time.

one

How to clean a charcoal grill

Estimated working time: 20 minutes, 10 minutes for the cover.

Remove the main and fire grates. Remove the remaining ash with a small broom or collect it in an ash container. If the container is dirty, it’s time to take care of it.

Fill a bucket with hot water and some dish soap. You don’t need expensive paint removers or chemical solutions. Scrub the inside of the bowl with a scouring sponge: the ash residue is relatively easy to remove. On this occasion, oil deposits should also be removed.

Now back to the cover. Turn it upside down, pour some soapy water and rub to remove any peeling brown or black paint. This is not a color, but gas molecules that solidify and accumulate. These need to be removed very carefully.

How to clean a gas grill

Estimated working time: 15 minutes

First remove the diffusers (these are the plates between the cooking grate and the flames) and brush. Before replacing the diffusers, light the gas: if some flames are yellow, combustion is not optimal, probably because sediment has accumulated in the tubes. Scrape them with a wire brush. Depending on the grill model, you may need to disassemble it beforehand. Be careful not to damage the openings with vigorous scrubbing.

Also, check the spark plug and gas lines. If the spark plug is rusty, rub it with sandpaper to fix it. If the hoses appear damaged, it’s time to replace them. Follow the device’s operating instructions. It would be a shame to start the barbecue season with a gas leak.

How to clean grill grates

Estimated working time: 15 minutes

Grilles and grill plates remain. They also need to be thoroughly cleaned on a regular basis. Grilles are full of dirt and rust after a rainy winter. Use the sponge to vigorously scrape the dirty grates. You can also use a stainless steel spiral sponge, but be careful not to damage the metal, or small pieces of metal may end up on the food. Our advice: Clean the cooking grates only with a sponge and warm water, without using any cleaning agents.

4

This is how you can make your grill shiny

Estimated working time: 3 mins

Now that you’ve cleaned the inside of your grill, it would be a shame to leave it alone. Of course, the cover should also be thoroughly cleaned. All you need is some warm water and dish soap. Wet a sponge and squeeze it over the lid. Leave the liquid on for 30 seconds, rinse the cap with clean water and dry with a clean, dry microfiber cloth. Avoid doing this in full sun: Soapy water dries in seconds and leaves unsightly lines.

5

This is how you check the grill before the season starts

Estimated working time: 30 minutes

The best way to ensure that no residue or traces of product remains is to let the grill dry for a while by burning it. After half an hour, let it cool. If you want to use it right away, make sure there are no visible residues or suspicious odors left.

6

So you can regulate the temperature

Estimated working time: 5 min

Buy a thermometer! Admittedly, this tip has nothing to do with cleanliness. But if you’ve followed all these steps, you’re serious about grilling. And for this, a good thermometer is an indispensable tool.

The thermometers integrated in the lids are faulty and do not show the temperature on the grill. Look for a digital thermometer, preferably with two probes that are accurate to the degree. One probe is for grill temperature, which you can mount inside an aluminum ball, and the other is for meat. You can buy such a device for 30 or 40 francs.

A thermometer is essential, especially if you want to cook a perfect steak.
