It is Arnold Schwarzenegger’s first leading role in a series: Netflix’s latest action series “Fubar”. It has been available on the streaming provider since May 25 and also reached the top spot in the streaming charts in Switzerland.
Fubar is inspired by James Cameron’s 1994 film True Lies, starring Schwarzenegger. “Everywhere I go, people ask me when I’m going to do another big action comedy like True Lies. Well, here she is,” said the native Austrian.
In the Netflix series, 75-year-old Schwarzenegger plays a father who finds out that his daughter (played by Monica Barbara) is also a CIA agent. They realize their whole relationship was a lie and they really don’t know each other. Forced to work together, the series explores themes of family dynamics in an environment of spies and action.
As in real life, Schwarzenegger has Austrian roots in “Fubar” and therefore speaks with an accent and makes fun of his own image.
Just last week, the former governor of California was named Netflix’s new chief action officer. He promises Netflix subscribers the biggest explosions out there, because no one knows action like he does.
Opinions on Arnie’s latest series are mixed. While The Hollywood Reporter writes that the series is “not boring” and “mediocre” and that professional critics give the action comedy 49 out of 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, Schwarzenegger’s fans are rather enthusiastic.
On social media, many write that the series is funny and fun. This is also evident from the rating on Rotten Tomatoes. At 70 percent, the audience’s score is significantly higher than that of the critics.
rounded #FUBAR last night and I enjoyed it. Leans more towards comedy than action, but also isn’t afraid to sneak in a heartbreaking moment (especially in the later episodes). @Schwarzenegger is in great shape and I loved seeing his comedic chops. Monica Barbara is excellent. pic.twitter.com/Zb0GsDSf6c

The new series Fubar with Arnold Schwarzenegger on Netflix is really funny! Dark humor. The show doesn’t take itself seriously at all and that’s why it’s so good. Arnold is almost retired from CIA with a daughter who True Lies him and then they have to work on a mission together #fubar pic.twitter.com/TGYBG4F4ur

Arnold is new @netflix series #FUBAR it’s entertaining.
Ignore the bogus reviews from snobbish critics (who simply expect spy comedy movies to have European arthouse screenplays).
FUBAR is the fun, enjoyable series that fans love #True lies (1994) have been waiting for years. pic.twitter.com/VUnQow7sKt— Reem (@reemsaied) May 28, 2023
But that’s not all Schwarzenegger. Netflix is releasing a three-part documentary about the actor on June 7, and his book Be Useful: Seven Tools for Life, a guide to fitness and life tips, has been announced for the fall.
