It was January 2020: with “Underwater – It’s Awakened” a new Hollywood production with a star cast came out. The whole thing looked pretty interesting in the trailer and poster – they promised some kind of mix of the James Cameron blockbusters “Aliens” and “Abyss – Abyss of Death”. Yet hardly anyone saw the thriller, which is a cross between science fiction, horror and action. Today is your first chance to catch up on what you missed on Free TV:
“Underwater – It’s awake” will be broadcast tonight at midnight on RTL. If that’s too late for you despite tomorrow’s vacation, you can watch the movie at any time as part of your Disney+ subscription.
Alternatively, online retailers like Amazon offer the FSK 16 title on Blu-ray/DVD and as paid streaming video-on-demand:
“Underwater” on RTL: That’s the story
The smart Norah (Kristen Stewart) works as a mechanic in a huge high-tech research station, more than seven miles below sea level in the western Pacific Ocean. The monotonous, claustrophobic life she and the other people there lead is shaken by an unannounced seaquake that severely damages the outer shell of the facility.
Large amounts of water immediately pour in, killing most of the crew. In a panic, Norah teams up with her colleagues Paul (TJ Miller) and Rodrigo (Mamoudou Athie) to find other survivors. Together with Captain Lucien (Vincent Cassel), the marine biologist Emily (Jessica Henwick) and several others, they eventually want to save themselves in diving suits over the seabed to a nearby oil rig.
However, in the desperate and extremely dangerous attempt, they not only have to deal with the enormous depth pressure, the darkness and other aftershocks. Suddenly they are also confronted with attacks from mysterious creatures that have apparently been released from the earth’s mass by the strong shaking…

Kristen Stewart & Co. were simply ignored.
In the person of Kristen Stewart, who became world famous for the “Twilight” saga, a real star heads the cast of “Underwater – It’s Awakened”. Other popular mimes also join the cast with TJ Miller, who did the mocking sidekick to the titular hero in Deadpool 1+2, and Hate and The Crimson Rivers veteran Vincent Cassel. Still, The Signal and Paranormal Activity 7 director William Eubank’s work, reportedly $80 million, failed at the US box office. Not even a quarter of the budget could be recovered there.
In Germany, when it was released at the same time, it looked even darker. Also because almost no cinema wanted to show the film at all. In large parts of the republic there was simply no chance to see him. Even in a metropolis like Hamburg, he only played for a few days in the smallest hall of a suburban multiplex. All other cinemas in the Hanseatic city simply ignored the start and preferred to show the very weak reboot of “The Grudge”, which also appeared on January 9, 2020, or continue to show the blockbusters “Star Wars 9” and “Jumanji 2”. , which started in December.
Read through our average two and a half star MOVIE STARTS review of “Underwater” and decide if you want to see the movie tonight. Even though not much happens in terms of content and the characters are only thinly drawn, there is at least something in it a convincingly claustrophobic atmosphere and quite a bit of suspense.
