There are certainly many good reasons to watch “FUBAR” in the German dubbed version. After all, many of you want to know who will voice action legend Arnold Schwarzenegger permanently in Germany now that his permanent spokesperson, Thomas Danneberg, has been retired for some time. This article isn’t meant to be synchro-bashing either, but there’s a very simple reason why we recommend the original version here in particular.
With “FUBAR” Arnold Schwarzenegger makes a fool of himself – and that can’t be synced in the form at all. Because part of that is that his character Luke Brunner has the same background as the actor himself: he’s actually Austrian.
Bengel, Hosenscheißer: You miss that in the German synchro
It’s been a long time since Schwarzenegger put such a thick German accent into his role as he did in “FUBAR” on Netflix. You just miss that in the dubbed version – and that’s not all.
Unfortunately, the humor is very flat and irritating at times. But It gets funny when Schwarzenegger turns up the heat and suddenly uses German terms in his sentences. If he sometimes calls his counterpart “crook” or “pants shit”, it’s not necessarily the joke. These moments are mainly achieved through the differing reactions of the other characters. Sometimes people are momentarily perplexed, sometimes they ask, sometimes they try to ignore it in some way. These moments lose their effect in the German version – they are the strongest of the entire series.
Also if you prefer German dubbed versions otherwise: If you can do it with your knowledge of English (optionally you can also turn on German subtitles) and you are a fan of Schwarzenegger and/or “FUBAR”, then you should definitely check out the original version! But don’t expect the ‘Terminator’ star to keep cursing in German. The moments are used evenly, otherwise they would wear out quickly.
