Slippers instead of pumps: the high-heeled dilemma at the Cannes Film Festival

Jennifer Lawrence wore flip-flops instead of heels on the red carpet, reigniting a long-simmering controversy.

Every year, the Cannes Film Festival red carpet offers the stars the chance to prove their (or that of their stylists) talent for fashion. The looks are analyzed and praised in the well-known fashion magazines – and also in 2023 special attention will be paid (again) to the footwear in combination with the evening dress.

Actress Jennifer Lawrence made headlines with her choice of shoes. With her red haute couture dress from Dior, she probably wore the last pair of shoes you would associate with glamour: flip flops. Summer shoes, on the other hand, are perfect for making a statement against dress codes.

Lawrence’s appearance came shortly after colleague Natalie Portman stressed during a media briefing about her new film “May December” that women should play different roles depending on the environment. That was also the case at Cannes, Portman said: “Here too, we women are expected to behave differently, including towards men.” The statement is taken by many as an allusion to the different strict dress codes for men and women at the film festival.

The invitation to the top event does not explicitly state which shoes must be worn, but only ‘evening wear’. Still, flat women’s shoes were a no-go for a long time. The unwritten rule was that women in high heels had to climb the steps to the cinema.

When a group of older women were denied access to the festival in 2015 because their choice of shoes was probably not spectacular enough for the festival, a discussion arose. Julia Roberts and Kristen Steward, for example, appeared provocatively barefoot on the red carpet. Kristen Stewart said in 2017, “If you can’t tell men to wear heels and a dress, you can’t tell me.”

There has never been an official change to the dress code. Since then, however, actresses have repeatedly appeared on the Cannes red carpet, swapping pumps for ballerinas. French actress Maimouna N’Diaye proved in 2019 that flat shoes don’t have to be less chic. And another French woman, the model Inès de la Fressange, has been proving for more than 10 years that elegance can also be done without heels.
