Although production preparations had already begun, costumes were being made and test shots were already underway with Nicolas Cage in the Superman outfit, the plug was pulled in 1998 shortly before shooting started.
Burton fell out with the producer and left the project after creative differences. There were then several attempts to revive it with a new director, but they were unsuccessful. The project is said to have cost at least $30 million, though it was never filmed.
