Netflix deals with shared passwords

On Tuesday, Netflix released an update on the use of shared passwords in the United States, where from now on only members of a “household” can use the same account.

A home is considered “a set of Internet-connected devices in the main place where you watch Netflix,” as the streaming giant specified in a statement released Tuesday.

“Your account from Netflix is for you and the people you live with: your home,” the message reads electronic mail that those Americans who allow them to apply with their passwords from habitual residence.

Of course, the terminals connected to that “home” will continue to work while the owners are “traveling” or want to project their accounts to ” TV from the hotel or in your holiday home.

In addition, platform they will offer theirs customers in the US, two options before sharing a password: a user living away from home can transfer their profile to a new paid subscription, or the account owner can add another member for an $8 monthly fee.

“The additional member will have their own profile, account and password, but their membership will be paid for by the person who invited them to join,” Netflix explained.

The additional user alternative can be used only once in standard account types and up to two times in premium subscriptions.

However, the company did not clarify whether it will penalize those subscribers who continue to share bills outside their homes, as was the case in Spain, Portugal, Canada and New Zealand, countries where this policy is already in place.

Finally, Tuesday’s statement concluded an attempt to prevent a flight of customers following the new changes: “We will continue to invest heavily in a wide variety of new movies and program TVso that (…) there is always something that satisfies you Netflix“.

The shared password control model is one of the main problems of the platform, which has suffered significant problems loss of user for this reason in regions such as Latin America, but managed to make up for it by offering lower-priced packages with advertising.
