With “Oppenheimer”, the new film by Christopher Nolan (“Tenet”) awaits us on July 20, 2023 in German cinemas. Cillian Murphy stars in the eponymous lead role, playing the role of physicist Julius Robert Oppenheimer and his team to develop a nuclear weapon under the supervision of General Leslie Groves (Matt Damon). Which eventually succeeds and has serious consequences. In the hands of Christopher Nolan, this historic work is sure to be one of the most compelling viewing experiences of the year.
But now the luxury problem: not only “Oppenheimer” starts in German cinemas on July 20, but also the long-awaited “Barbie” by Greta Gerwig (“Lady Bird”). In it, Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken try to escape the seemingly perfect Barbieland after realizing that true perfection isn’t measured by people’s looks. The first, candy-colored and fully unleashed trailers already released have greatly increased the anticipation.
“Oppenheimer” vs. “Barbie”: Matt Damon Has The Answer!
A heated debate has erupted on the internet since the parallel release dates of these very different but highly anticipated films became known. It’s a matter of faith here: movie fans can’t seem to agree on which of the two works you should see first. Matt Damon was recently released from the interviewed and also raised in this discussion. Damon was unaware of the violent reactions online to “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie” starting on the same day: “This is actually the first time I hear about it. I didn’t pay attention to that.”
But that’s not the end of the matter for Matt Damon, instead he has a solution ready, at least when it comes to which of the two movies you should watch at all: “People are allowed this weekend Watching movies. ‘Oppenheimer’ is one of them!” Correct answer Matt! The actor, who is the father of four daughters, may have to adapt to that his family got to choose “Barbie” first. His response: “I have to ask you. If so, they’re going to see two movies this weekend.”
That actually says enough, because in reality it doesn’t matter whether you first watch “Oppenheimer” (which incidentally has a running time of 169 minutes) or “Barbie”. It is much more important that – if you feel like seeing both blockbusters – you go to the cinema twice to support both films accordingly. It remains to be seen who will ultimately prevail and rake in more money at the global box office. But one can expect an extremely exciting duel in the cinema lists!
