What heartless party-goers and kitchen-table psychologists have known for a long time has also been scientifically proven: the “ugly friend effect” really exists. This is suggested by this study, published in the journal Psychological Science from Royal Holloway University in London.
Researcher talks about ‘distraction face’
The subjects of the study were asked to rate the attractiveness of the people in the photographs. When the same people later reappeared in the photos, this time with more average-looking escorts, they were seen as more attractive.
Ugly people in the picture triggered it further: “We found that a distracting face makes the differences between attractive people more pronounced,” writes study leader Nicholas Furl. (rey)
