What a location! Thun, on the lake of the same name, is one of the most beautiful cities in Switzerland, with views of the Bernese Alps.

Thun Castle

Thun Castle rises above the city and becomes an integral part of the cityscape. For a long time, the 12th-century building served as a symbol of the Zähringen’s power over the region and trade routes. The castle has been home to a museum since 1888. Since a part of the palace complex was used as a regional prison for a long time, the ticket seller of the time also held the prison directorate. Today the castle is fully operated as a museum and event venue. Museum gates are open every day except November-January. In addition to the permanent exhibition that guides visitors through the castle’s history, special exhibits shed light on the work of Swiss artists and elements of Thun’s history. So right now it’s a special exhibition for FC Thun’s 125th anniversary.

Schadau Park

The idyllic Schadau Park is just a 15-minute walk from Thun train station. Designed in the English garden style, the park has been open to the public since 1860 and is a popular local recreation area for the Thun people. The paths of the park run along the shores of Lake Thun and on fine days offer unmatched views of the trio of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. A plant nature trail explains the origin of the many trees and shrubs that green the park. The Wocher pavilion with panorama inside the complex is definitely worth seeing. The world’s oldest surviving panorama shows the 38-metre-long cityscape of Thun city 200 years ago. Would you like a drink? The Schadau Castle’s restaurant welcomes its guests in the imposing rooms of this architectural heritage.

mill square

Mühleplatz is the heart and soul of Thun city. On the site of what was once Thuner Mühle, various cafes and restaurants have now rented space and use the large square on the banks of the Aare as a communal terrace. There is a lot of activity here, especially in the summer. At the end of July, a small music festival “Finally” takes place on the Mühleplatz, giving the stage to artists from all over the world. Just a little later, on the second weekend of August, the square fills up with visitors and the Ferris wheel of the annual Thun Festival. These days the Mühleplatz transforms into a big, cozy summer bar filled with the best live music, cool drinks and social people, and radiates pure joie de vivre and good vibes.

Schwabis river pool

Dubbed the municipal bath by Thun residents, the “Schwäber” offers optimum cooling on hot summer days from 20 May to 17 September 2023. The river baths were built in 1869 at the point where the two branches of the Inner and Outer Aare flow together, making Thun city center an island. The wooden building is now a proprietary structure and makes bathing in the cool Aare a nostalgic experience. Bathers in the adjacent restaurant “im Schwäber” are pampered with fresh menus and mandatory bathroom classics. Schwäbis is the perfect place for a safe bathing experience on the river stream and should be on the to-do list on a summer day trip to the city of Thun.

CC Thursday

Thun Cultural and Convention Center is right next to the Thun-Schadau High School building. In 2010, the old Schadau Hall was remodeled and since then two large, modern halls have been opened for conventions, events, theatre, concerts and more. The impetus for the modernization of the Congress building was to host the Swiss Economic Forum, which took place today in Interlaken. Still, the city of Thun has been able to take advantage of the renovations and offer an exciting program of events at KK Thun each year.

Thun Art Museum

Another impressive building in Thun is the former Grandhotel Thunerhof. In an idyllic location overlooking the Aare, the Thunerhof now houses an art museum as well as several public apartments. Four to five temporary exhibitions per year are devoted to contemporary art. Starting February 4, the focus will be on the work of Thun-born artist Theo Gerber, a rebel in the art industry who never wanted to subordinate himself to any particular art style. This exhibition will be presented in a complex and colorful way accordingly. The museum shop has publications in line with the current exhibit. After visiting the museum, it is useful to linger at the adjacent Cafe Artikum. Cappuccino with mountain and river views completes the artistic experience.

Upper Main Street

It’s not just a popular photo subject since Instagram: the iconic Obere Hauptgasse in Thun’s old town. It connects the old Lauitor to the town hall square. The street profile is unusual: entrances to the lower floors protrude on both sides of the street. This creates a two-story row of shops with characteristic raised sidewalks. The shops in Obere Hauptgasse are colorful, unique and not typical of city shops, which makes shopping here a very special and refreshing experience. A break at Atelier Classic Bar is an absolute must. Award-winning bartender Ivan Urech and his team bring together the most incredible drinks in a stylish atmosphere here, while the bar menu is an experience in its witty words – see for yourself!
