Yes, it’s true: in our FILMSTARTS review, the thriller only gets an average of two and a half stars. In my opinion “Con airHowever, one of the best movies of the 1990s. To me, director Simon West’s work (“Lara Croft: Tomb Raider”) is still one of the most entertaining works in the entire action scene, even after watching it countless times.
“Con Air” airs today, May 18, 2023, at 10:35 PM on VOX. If the date doesn’t suit you, you can stream the show at any time as part of your Disney+ subscription.

“Con Air” on VOX: That’s the story
When Cameron Poe (Nicolas Cage) tries to protect his wife Tricia (Monica Potter) and their unborn baby from a trio of aggressive drunks, he accidentally kills one of the men. The judge shows no mercy and sentences the highly decorated soldier to eight years in prison. On the day of his release, he is taken to his family on a plane carrying a number of thugs (including Ving Rhames, Danny Trejo, Steve Buscemi).
But the criminal mastermind Cyrus “The Virus” Grissom (John Malkovich), who is also on board, and his henchmen manage to take control of the highly secured machine. Her goal is to flee to a country that will not extradite her. While US Marshal Larkin (John Cusack) tries to take control of the situation on the ground, Poe must somehow survive in the midst of a situation spiraling out of control, surrounded by psychopaths…

More action is not possible!
Admittedly, when “Con Air” hit theaters in the summer of 1997, I hadn’t seen a five-figure number of movies, so it was probably a little easier to impress. Still, my enthusiasm for the cracker hasn’t waned since. I still love how mercilessly Nicolas Cage, John Malkovich, Ving Rhames and their colleagues blast through here.
The screenplay by Scott Rosenberg (‘Nur 60 Seconds’) and the staging also knew no restraint. Mega-producer Jerry Bruckheimer (‘Top Gun’, ‘The Rock’, ‘Bad Boys’ etc.) has brought us many great bangers over the course of his unparalleled career. But none of them offer more spectacular explosions and crazy set pieces than, say, the Las Vegas sequence just before the finale. Also, I can’t think of another movie without Stallone or Schwarzenegger’s participation that features more gritty one-liners that can be quoted in every possible situation.
The whole sets a breathless pace, where there is not a moment of boredom. Whether it’s a dramatic twist, an ironic moment amidst all the chaos and violence, or whimsical like Steve Buscemi’s strangely moving vocal performance, something unexpected always happens. And yet everything flows together perfectly, never seeming put together, bumpy or rushed. Do yourself a favor and tune into Con Air tonight.
