Caesar Salad: The Secret of Classic Italian-American Cuisine

Homemade Caesar Salad with Chicken, Lettuce and Parmesan No other salad in the USA is as popular as Caesar Salad. This is a classic of Italian American cuisine. It has been passionately prepared by star chefs and private households for almost 100 years and has changed forever since then. The special thing about it is the perfectly prepared vinaigrette. And the dish actually comes from Mexico. The History of Caesar Salad There are many legends about its name. Some think of Roman ruler Julius Caesar, while others think of César Ritz, founder of the legendary Paris Hotel Ritz. But in the end, everyone comes to the same conclusion: It was Caesar Cardini, an Italian immigrant who is said to have invented it in Mexico in 1924. Since the sale of alcohol is not allowed in the USA due to Prohibition, Americans came to Mexico to drink. That’s why he opened a restaurant in Mexico. Legend has it that on July 4, 1924, America’s national holiday, it actually filled the country. Given the density, Cardini is said to have a pragmatic idea: Since the ingredients were not enough for all the guests, he invented a dish from what was left in the kitchen: lettuce leaves, peel and bread. This is how the Caesar Salad was created. Caesar Salad achieved international success only a few years after that national holiday: In 1929, Cardini opened a Hotel Caesar’s in Tijuana. The hotel quickly became a magnet for the Hollywood greats of the time. Of course, Caesar Salad was also on the menu, and then it spread from Mexico to the rest of the world via Hollywood.
