Mathias Tortolero Emperador, 11, won a silver medal in the 2023 Mathematical Olympiad for his school, Centro Educativo Corinto de Panamá.
According to the sixth grader, the effort and hours of preparation paid off, as he is grateful to the people who accompanied him on this trip.
Tortolero Emperador had preparation about two and a half months, one hour a day, for Olympiad with the help of a renowned Physicist Temistocles Bernal.
Surimay Emperador, Mathias’ mother, said her son had promised to do everything in his power to win medal for his school and he achieved this in the first participation of the educational center in these Olympiads.
(…) when he received the news, he was quite surprised, he couldn’t believe it, he was very emotional, he hugged my father and me with great emotion… We are very proud of your achievements and willing to continue supporting him so he can achieve his goals,” Emperador said.
Tortolero Emperador commented for Panama America that mathematics was always one of his favorite classeshe likes to assemble legos and robotics, and he also tends to study aeronautical engineering and a bachelor’s degree in robotics.
In addition, his special interest in mathematicsTortolero Emperador enjoys building Legos and robotics, he built his first car, only it only moves in a straight line.
“Mathias is a sociable boy, very sociable, who loves readingthe music, musicthe sportscomputers and with a special interest in mathematics, he likes to learn as much as he can and explore his interests,” explained his mother.

The school was represented by a group of seven students and educational community is very happy about the silver medal won by Tortolero Emperador, which according to Henllys Gómez López (pedagogical director and owner of the educational center), represents 2.2% of children with much above average intelligence.
