Present ‘Imaginary, Feminism and Modernity in Panama’

The book “Imaginary, feminism and modernity in Panama” is the result of the research project “Imaginary, feminism and the emergence of the suffragette movement in Panama (1920-1947)” developed by Dr. Edda Samudio.

The paper emphasizes the gender approach for a a more extensive overview of Panamanian historiography and gives a diagnosis and analysis of all the contributions made by women, as well as the importance of forming a woman from childhood, awakening her conscience and searching for a place in society to get what she longed for in the face of restrictions.

“This research allows us to learn about history panama, emphasizing the dawn of feminism in Panama, in sports, the construction of the imaginary of modern women, the socio-symbolic aspects of the Panamanian woman, the opinion and action regarding the civil and political rights of women, and the feminist struggle and will for change,” explains its author.

The goal, the researcher summarizes, was to determine from a gender perspective what was the process of constructing the female imaginary in Panama in the light of sociopolitical, cultural and economic changes in the country and its expression in the movement for the right to vote (1920-1947).
