The dog is considered man’s best friend. From large gumballs to small Chihuaha, animals come in different shapes and have their own character traits. Since every dog in Switzerland must be registered with Amicus, the national database for dogs, it is currently possible to determine exactly which breeds are particularly popular.
According to statistics from Identitas, the development of dog breeds can be followed precisely. The latest status is as of August 2020 and here are the top 10 most popular dog breeds below:
1. hybrid
By far the most popular dog breed in Switzerland is and will remain a mixed breed, a cross between different breeds of dogs. They are considered particularly robust and come in all possible sizes. Of these, 130,965 animals currently live in Switzerland.
2. Chihuahua
It is the smallest dog breed in the world, but still has a big place in the heart of Switzerland. Paris Hilton isn’t the only one to praise the characterful mini dogs: Chihuahuas have been the second most popular dogs in Switzerland for years.
3. Labrador
Labrador is in third place. A total of 24,086 of the adorable family dogs live in Switzerland. They are known for their friendly, inquisitive nature, love the water and are one of the most popular dog breeds worldwide.
4. Yorkshire Terriers
This little ball of fur finished fourth. One reason for the popularity of the Yorkshire Terrier may be that they do not experience severe seasonal shedding. Animals are also very confident, lively and intelligent.
By the way, this breed of dog was originally bred in Ireland to hunt rats and mice.
5. Jack Russell Terriers
This year we still find the Jack Russel Terrier in fifth place. Little hounds are active, lively and fearless and therefore need a lot of attention and activity.
6. French Bulldog
The French bulldog is the sixth most popular dog breed in Switzerland. Cute and brave, although a bit of a troll, these dogs are becoming more and more popular. Unfortunately, like many short-nosed dogs, they are often prone to respiratory problems.
7. Border collie
Border Collies have long been kept almost exclusively as sheep herding dogs in the British Isles. They’re also popular pets now, but they need to be kept busy. Otherwise, intelligent animals will get bored. They rank eighth among the most popular dog breeds in Switzerland.
8. Golden Retrievers
There are 11,825 Golden Retrievers living in Switzerland. The four-legged friends moved up to eighth place. This breed is considered friendly, reliable and loves to fetch – making it an excellent family dog.
9. Miniature Poodle
The miniature poodle is the ninth most popular dog breed in Switzerland. It sheds very little, is active and very docile if you raise it with love. Miniature poodles should be trimmed regularly as their feathers continue to grow.
10. German shepherd
9,909 registered German Shepherd Dogs currently reside in Switzerland. Animals are known for their keen sense of smell and alertness. For this reason, they are often used as service dogs for the army, customs and police.
