For anyone who thinks that no horror movie can really shock them anymore, the wait for that one movie that will teach them different comes to an end: Herman Yau’s Legendary Pandemic Ripper”Ebola syndromeswill be released for the first time on Blu-ray on May 19, 2023.
For fans of the particularly brutal genre of entertainment who may not be familiar with the Hong Kong banger, this is the perfect opportunity to catch up on one of the most disturbing films of all time.
Distributor Busch Media is giving “Ebola Syndrome” its unabridged HD premiere in Germany and releasing the film in four strictly limited media book versions, some of which are still available on Amazon: Cover A* like Cover C* are very popular and are currently no longer available, Cover B* And Cover D* but you can still get it right now. It should only be a matter of time before these two versions sell out.
Want to stream the movie uncut? Then you don’t have to wait any longer. “Ebola Syndrome” is already available in its entirety on various streaming platforms such as Amazon Prime Video:
Those who use the digital version can currently buy “Ebola Syndrome” for 9.99 euros in SD and 11.99 euros in HD. From May 18, you can also rent the film digitally on various platforms. And for those who swear by physical media, the chic-chi about limited collector’s editions is not well received, the film will also be available as a standard edition on June 2. DVD and Blu Ray*.
We’ve scrutinized the limited edition in the media book (Cover A) beforehand – and can only recommend grabbing the limited edition. Provided, of course, that you’re ready for a heart-pounding movie nightmare. But before we go deeper into the collector’s edition, we want to briefly tell you what “Ebola Syndrome” is all about:
What to Expect With “Ebola Syndrome”
“Ebola Syndrome” begins with a tongue cut out and a girl doused in petrol, before every conceivable bodily fluid splashes through the screen in excess and finally chickens or frogs are killed on camera with terrifying carelessness.
And all this before the story of Kai’s Ebola infection of the same name, played by legendary actor Anthony Wong (“Infernal Affairs”), even begins! And the horror with murder, rape and deliberate infection with a deadly disease, which gets under your skin especially in the Corona era, is only extreme…
Morbid chic: “Ebola syndrome” in the media book
The agony of choice: Busch Media donated four media books with the same content to the film, which differ only in their presentation – thus serving the most diverse tastes. There really is something for everyone.
And in terms of circulation, you’ve probably been lucky: with 4 x 1,000 copies, it’s not even that small. The fact that the interest in the film is enormous is evidenced by the fact that, as mentioned, two media book versions are sold out before release.

The presentation is impressive: The coloring of the motif is atmospheric and at the same time makes it quite clear that the film will get to the point – without being too explicit or crude. A SPIO/JK mark and the inscriptions such as “Limited Mediabook” and “16-page booklet” are only on a cover sheet stuck to the Mediabook. On the Mediabook itself is the “clean” cover, on which the movie title is the only thing written.
On the back, not only some harsh scene images, but also press quotes such as “raises the bar even higher in terms of disgust”, “the definition of a sick person in film” or “a blatant series of misadventures” underline that “Ebola Syndrome” is really not For those who want to know more about the films they are watching, the booklet also gives a look behind the scenes – including an interview with director Herman Yau.

For the first time in HD: “Ebola Syndrome” has appeared on DVD in numerous variations over the years. However, many of the publications are many years old – and the quality is no longer up to date. The Blu-ray is a definite upgrade here.
However, you should keep in mind that this is not a 4K Blu-ray and is ultimately a Hong Kong horror film shot in the 90s for a relatively low budget. It’s a good thing you can see this in the photo, which still looks natural even in HD. Because in this way the film visually retains that dirtyness that also makes it substantive. And in the end it often quickly loses its effect due to even more sharpness, increased contrasts and the like.

The price is hot: At 27.99 euros, the price of the collector’s edition is also absolutely reasonable. Especially when compared to other rental companies that often put already available discs back on the market in so-called “repacks” as media books – and are happy to charge 35 euros or more for them. In the case of “Ebola Syndrome”, on the other hand, we are dealing with a Blu-ray premiere that many genre fans are eagerly awaiting. The soon-to-be-released standard edition also offers potential buyers a cheaper alternative – while elsewhere expensive collector’s editions are not unusual for exclusive use.
Conclusion: If you have a soft spot for hard-to-digest movie fare, you can’t avoid “Ebola Syndrome.” – and the new home theater review more than does justice to the legendary Hong Kong shocker. However, if you narrow your own boundaries of what’s bearable a bit, you’ll have to give this movie a wide berth. Because he unleashes an almost incomparable horror closet that may not let you go long after the credits roll…
