Researchers at the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL) have discovered microbes that digest plastic in the Swiss Alps. (icon image)

Microbes found in the Graubünden Alps and the Arctic were able to digest plastic from household sponges, for example, as the study published Wednesday in the journal “Frontiers in Microbiology” showed.

Major advance: microbes digested plastic at just 15 degrees Celsius. A few microorganisms capable of digesting plastic were previously known. When asked by the Keystone-SDA news agency, lead author Joel Rüthi of the WSL research institute said, “But these are typically tested above 30 degrees Celsius.”

The fact that the newly discovered microorganisms are also active at lower temperatures reduces the energy required and thus makes the enzyme degradation of plastic cheaper and more climate-friendly. (SDA)
