Explained: This Is The Girl At The End Of “Guardians Of The Galaxy 3” – Which Is Why It Might Still Matter To The MCU

Director James Gunn hasn’t promised too much: even if none of the main characters die in “Guardians Of The Galaxy Volume 3” in the end, the Guardians as we know them will be disbanded. But that is certainly not the end of the team. With Rocket Raccoon (voice: Bradley Cooper) as the new leader, we already see in the first credits scene how the now slightly differently structured troop throw themselves into their next adventure. In addition to regular members Rocket and Groot (voice: Vin Diesel), it also features ex-Ravager Kraglin (Sean Gunn), the talking dog Cosmo (voice: Maria Bakalova), the mighty Adam Warlock (Will Poulter) and his new pet Blurp …

… And one of the white-haired girls (Kai Zen), which the Guardians previously rescued from the clutches of the High Evolutionary (Chikwudi Iwuji) stored and who also seems to have special abilities. In the movie, it’s somewhat unexpected that the rising heroine is suddenly part of the Guardians as well. However, this again refers to Marvel’s comic book templates. Because as the credits show, this is a character named Phyla, who should be familiar to many comic book aficionados…

This is Phyla Vell

The character’s full name is Phyla-Vell, and she is the daughter of the first Captain Marvel in the comics (the Kree Mar-Vell) and the titan Elysius (Elysius only created Phyla-Vell after Mar-Vell’s death, using his genetic material). She has also joined the Guardians of the Galaxy in the comics, where Phyla first appeared in 2004, following in her father’s footsteps as the new Captain Marvel.

An artificially created Kree-Titan hybrid, she possesses superhuman strength, speed, and durability, as well as the ability to fly. She is also able to absorb energy attacks on her and return them as energy blasts. For some time now she also possesses the so-called Quantum Bands, which allow her to manipulate energy much more widely, even allowing her to travel through space and defend herself against telepathic attacks.

Indeed, these quantum bonds would be a viable candidate to one day become the next powerful artifact in the MCU that various parties are seeking (like the Infinity Stones before). It is also not excluded that there is a connection in the movie universe between this and the legendary ten rings from “Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings”, which also seem to be of extraterrestrial origin, which is still true for discover in upcoming Marvel movies.

Will we see Phyla-Vell back in the MCU?

Meanwhile, Phylas DNA donor Mar-Vell has also played a role in the MCU. Here he became a woman who was played by Annette Bening in “Captain Marvel” and passed her powers on to Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), who then became the new Captain Marvel. So there’s potential for Phyla to join the Captain Marvel story (which will return to theaters soon with The Marvels) on the big screen.

However, it would also be conceivable that the connection between Phyla and Mar-Vell would be left out in the MCU and that the origin of their powers would only be found in the High Evolutionary’s experiments. An indication of this could be that the character in the credits of “Guardians 3” is now, as mentioned, only Phyla and not Phyla- mentioned, the reference to Mar- So (for now?) is not done.

But, of course, even if Phyla’s Origin story were to be changed, the groundwork is still laid for it to expand further as part of the new Guardians for the future MCU, either in an upcoming “Guardians Of The Galaxy 4” (then for the first time without James Gunn as director and writer) or in another Marvel cosmic adventure. Until then, Phyla’s mini appearance in “Guardian of the Galaxy 3‘, which is currently running successfully in cinemas.
