“The Boys” star becomes Johnny Cage in “Mortal Kombat 2”: it fits like a glove

Charles Urban will apparently be the role of Johnny Cage in the planned video game adaptation”Mortal Kombat 2” to take over. The American industry magazine reports that the star, known for the Amazon Prime Video hit “The Boys” and blockbuster film series such as “Star Trek”, “The Lord of the Rings” and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is in the final stages of negotiations. And usually such negotiations for a role for all parties come to a successful conclusion.

Johnny Cage is a Hollywood star and martial arts fighter in the Mortal Kombat games and known for his laid-back and slightly unnerving style, which also crosses the line into pure comedy here and there. The main inspiration for the character is action icon Jean-Claude Van Damme at the height of his career in the 1980s and 1990s and he is usually portrayed in the video games as a classic Hollywood protagonist à la Tom Cruise.

In the final scene of “Mortal Kombat‘ from 2021 has already been hinted at a Johnny Cage appearance with a movie-within-a-movie poster, so the film adaptation will obviously also be based on this depiction of the character. The fact that Cage is played by 50-year-old Karl Urban should mean that the character in “Mortal Kombat 2” is a bit older – perhaps so that the video game’s daughter Cassie Cage can also get a gig?

Anyway Urban seems like a good choice for the role, although he’s not exactly known for his martial arts skills. Even for a fighting game adaptation like “Mortal Kombat 2”, this isn’t necessarily the most important thing, as nominal protagonist Lewis Tan showed in “Mortal Kombat”: Tan undoubtedly has the fighting talent for the role, but found it difficult to put it under the get the hang of carrying the whole movie.

More importantly, the actors are convincing in their roles. And that Urban can play damn cool, robust guys, he showedthe boys“,”Dredd” and co. have already been sufficiently proven.

“Mortal Kombat 2”: That is known

Mortal Kombat 2 is written by writer Jeremy Slater (Moon Knight, The Umbrella Academy) and, like Part 1, directed by Simon McQuoid. In addition to the aforementioned Lewis Tan as Cole Young, who heads to Hollywood to recruit Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat’s final scene, a host of other characters from the first film will also return, including Jessica McNamee as the Sonya Blade and Mehcad Brooks. as Jax. And the fan favorites Scorpion and Sub-Zero probably won’t be missing either.

Mortal Kombat 2 currently has no release date. Now that casting has begun, filming should start soon. This means that publication in the course of 2024 is very well possible.
