The Federal Statistical Office regularly divides Switzerland into its separate parts. On Friday, the statisticians published parts of their collected work in 23 infographics.
It deals with various themes such as society, economy, space and environment. The graphs show, among other things, that the average Swiss spends 17 minutes per day commuting and 46.6 m per person2 housing is available. Did you know that 11 percent of the population has to be hospitalized for a year (one percent less than in the previous year) or 85 burglaries and burglaries are registered daily by the police (5 less than in the previous year)?
We’ve collected the most important of these infographics.
Let’s start with the basics: the population. In 2021, more people came to Switzerland than left, more children were born than died and more than twice as many marriages were concluded as there were divorces. In addition, the life expectancy of men and women has increased by 0.6 years.
More than 8.7 million people live in just 8 percent of Switzerland’s area. With us, most of the landscape is still “woods and shrubs” with almost a third. Compared to 2019, this has even increased by one percent:
Switzerland has about 5 million employees, with a gross monthly salary of CHF 6,665 (median, total economy), which is CHF 127 more than the previous year. However, real wages fell by 0.8 percent year-on-year.
Average annual inflation increased in all areas. The biggest difference is in the development of import prices. Compared to 2020, the price level has increased from 155.2 to 159.3 compared to the EU.
About 3,000 more companies were founded in 2020 than in 2019. In contrast to the second quarter of 2021, almost 200,000 more people were employed a year later.
There are almost 50,000 farms in Switzerland, 7,670 of which work according to organic standards. That is 100 more than the year before.
Energy dependence on imports fell by two percentage points to 70 percent between 2020 and 2021. In 2019, monthly household energy expenditure was 241 francs (2018: 267 francs). These prices are likely to rise again in the coming years.
In 2020, 10,635 buildings with apartments have been completed, with space for almost 50,000 apartments. This means that slightly fewer buildings but also slightly more apartments have been built than in the previous year.
On average, we are on the road for 90 minutes a day. Half of that in free time.
Spending on benefits is increasing in absolute terms (still 183 billion in 2019) and also as a percentage of GDP (still 25.1 percent in 2019).
85 percent of Swiss people enjoy good health. But the death toll increased significantly. This difference of around 9,000 compared to 2018 is due to Covid-19 in 2020.
96 percent of households have internet access. In 2019 that was still 92 percent. And the data volume in the mobile network is increasing rapidly: in 2021 it was 241 times as much as in 2010. Two years earlier, it was only 145 times.
The turnout over the past five years was 48 percent, 1.3 percentage points higher than in 2021.
In Switzerland 85 burglaries and burglaries are registered every day. In 2020 there were still five. There were about 600 fewer adults in prison than in 2020.
72.5 percent of residents are satisfied with their current life, only 2.7 percent are dissatisfied.
We published this article in 2021. We’ve updated it with the current graphics.
