American actor Michael Douglas will receive an honorary Palme d’Or at the next Cannes Film Festival in recognition of his “brilliant career” and dedication to cinema, the organization reported on Wednesday.
Douglas, 78 and the son of iconic actor Kirk Douglas, will be honored at La Croissete during the opening ceremony on May 16.
“It’s always a breath of fresh air to be in Cannes, which has been offering for a long time platform wonderful for brave creators, artistic daring and excellence in narration“, reads the statement of the translator, which is transmitted by the festival.
“Since my first arrival here in 1979 with ‘Chinese syndrome’ to my latest premiere with “Behind the Candelabra” (Behind the Chandelier) 2013, the Festival has always reminded me that the magic of cinema is not only in what we see on the screen, but in its ability to affect people from all over the world,” he added.
