Strangers are said to have swindled large quantities of Gruyère and Emmentaler and sold them in Great Britain. A complaint from the milk processor Cremo has been received by the Freiburg public prosecutor’s office.
Murielle Decurtins, clerk and spokeswoman for the public prosecutor’s office, confirmed reports from the newspapers “Le Temps” and “La Liberté” on Wednesday. The unknown perpetrators are said to have ordered 32.7 tons of cheese from Cremo using false e-mails.
The Freiburg company supplied the goods. She apparently assumed she would supply two major UK retail chains. The damage would amount to more than 450,000 francs.
The cheese first ended up in British warehouses before losing track of it. It was probably sold illegally in British supermarkets, wrote “Le Temps”. (oo/sda)
