“The Book Was Better” – a phrase often said or heard when leaving the cinema or turning off the television. And this year again countless books will be made into movies.
You can read the following nine books before the films appear in cinemas or on streaming services.
This prequel to the Hunger Games series tells the story of young Coriolanus Snow, played by Tom Blyth. At the tenth Hunger Games, he is given the chance to mentor and is assigned Lucy Gray Baird of the 12th Precinct.
The movie will be released in November 2023.
In March, Amazon announced that they would be making a series of the best-selling book We Were Liars. The series’ official description reads as follows: “A tragic love story and amnesiac thriller set on a private island off the coast of Massachusetts.”
Nothing is known about the cast or a possible release date.
Alice Walker became the first black woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1983 for The Color Purple. Shortly afterwards, the book was first made into a film by Steven Spielberg, starring Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey. The story follows two African American sisters living in Georgia in the early 1900s. Divorced as children, they maintain their relationship through a 20-year series of letters. The book covers topics such as sexual and domestic violence, incest and same-sex love.
The release of the remake has been announced for December 2023.
Several of Neil Gaiman’s books are currently being made into movies, with season one of “The Sandman” coming to Netflix last year and season 2 of “Good Omens” this summer. Now the story of “Anansi Boys” is being made into a movie, in which a man finds out that his father was an incarnation of the god Anansi.
The series will debut on Amazon Prime Video later this year.
Alex is the son of the American president and has to pretend to be friends with the British Prince Henry in front of the public. But friendship soon turns into more and Alex must be careful not to jeopardize his mother’s re-election.
The film will be available on Amazon Prime from August 11.
In the film adaptation of Lessons in Chemistry, Brie Larson plays Elizabeth Zott, whose dream of becoming a scientist is put on hold when she becomes pregnant in a society that believes women belong in the kitchen. But Elizabeth does not give up and does everything she can to return to the laboratory.
The film does not yet have a release date, but will be released on Apple TV+ later this year.
Anthony Doerr won the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for “All The Light We Cannot See,” and Netflix is now adapting the book as a four-part miniseries. The story revolves around a blind French teenager and a German soldier who meet in occupied France during World War II.
The series will be available on Netflix from November 2, 2023.
In this crime thriller, a teenage girl is accused of murdering an older man. As the parents (the father is a pastor and the mother is a criminal defense attorney) try to find out what happened, they are tested on how far they will go to protect their daughter.
The first season will be available on Netflix later this year.
In The Three Suns, author Cixin Liu writes about what would happen if humans encountered extraterrestrial life. In the 1960s, a research team worked with the aim of sending signals into space and establishing contact with other countries. 50 years later, the signals are picked up by an alien civilization on the brink of destruction.
The drama series is coming to Netflix later this year.
