Switzerland’s public holiday mess at a glance.
Benedict Theiler

On May 1, workers can enjoy an extra Friday. Just: not everywhere. Labor Day is celebrated in Zurich, the two Basels, the Jura, Neuenburg, Schaffhausen, Thurgau and Ticino. In the cantons of Aargau and Solothurn, people usually work only half a day. You have to work in the remaining cantons.

What about other holidays?

Blick.ch provides an overview of the holiday mess. In general: Since Switzerland has a large number of public holidays, employees may complain that only a few cantons have too few weekdays off. The business belongs on New Year’s Day, Ascension Day or Christmas Day, for example. So there are no jobs anywhere in Switzerland.

Additional leave days vary per canton

August 1 has been a public holiday since 1994.

Even on the national holiday, people all over Switzerland stay at home. August 1 has been a public holiday since 1994. It is the only day held at the national level.

Cantons are responsible for all other public holidays. This leads to large cantonal differences in how public holidays are handled. Adding local and regional holidays, such as the saint’s day celebrations in Solothurn, completes the holiday mess.

Which canton has the most days off?

The people of Ticino definitely have the most days off. In addition to the public holidays that fall on 1 August and Sunday, there are 14 additional holidays in the southern canton. That’s seven more than in Graubünden or Appenzell-Ausserrhoden. In these two cantons, people work most days of the year.

A workplace in a Catholic canton (Sonderbundskantone: LU, UR, SZ, OW, NW, ZG, FR, VS) is recommended for lazy people. There tends to be more public holidays here. In the remaining cantons, Appenzell-Innerrhoden, Jura, Aargau and Ticino offer the most holidays.

When is it celebrated?
