Spring is just around the corner. But just because there are more and more opportunities to catch a few rays doesn’t mean you can’t have just as much fun at the movies. But on the contrary. Because the current cinema innovations are really declaring war on the ever-improving weather with an immense variety! These films are new in theaters this week:
“Evil Dead Rise”: The devils dance again!
With “Evil Dead Rise”, the fifth “Tanz der Teufel” film comes to the cinemas, a full ten years after the successful reboot “Evil Dead” – and what a! The horror shock released by the FSK offers unabridged from the age of 18 “brilliant terror cinema that hurts in the best sense of the word in the violent scenes” and pushes the boundaries of mainstream horror film even more than its predecessors.
The FILMSTARTS review, which rates a strong 4 out of 5 stars for the “mercilessly staged to the point” shocker, reads, among other things: “The claim that the fake blood flows in streams in ‘Evil Dead Rise’ would probably being the understatement of the year…”
Fans of “Tanz der Teufel” can not only look forward to a lot of blood and atmospheric demonic horror this time, but also to a completely new setting. As the action moves from a cabin in the middle of the woods to Los Angeles, where two sisters Beth (Lily Sullivan) and Ellie (Alyssa Sutherland) discover the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis – opening the gateway to Hell…
“The Whale”: A Lesson in Humanity
Ever since its premiere at the Venice Film Festival, “The Whale” from hit studio Everything Everywhere All At Once has been a talking point for one reason in particular: Brendan Fraser. Than the former ‘The Mummy’ star is celebrating a comeback of superlatives – with the performance of a lifetime, which recently earned him his first Oscar. We gave master director Darren Aronofsky (“Black Swan,” “Requiem For A Dream”) an excellent 4.5 stars for “A Lesson in Empathy and Humanity.”
A faithful adaptation of the Samuel D. Hunter play of the same name, The Whale tells the story of Charlie, who left his family to live with a man. After his death, however, Charlie falls deeper and deeper into an emotional hole and hardly ever leaves the house – until he finally finds the courage to reach out to his 17-year-old daughter (Sadie Sink).
“Donnie Yen’s Sakra”: The “John Wick 4” star lets it rip again
John Wick 4 scene thief Donnie Yen returns to the big screen with a very special film. Because not only does he let his fists fly again in “Donnie Yen’s Sakra”. No, for the first time in over ten years he took the director’s chair for the historical action film with fantasy elements. The film, for which he obviously used Marvel as a model, could only convince FILMSTARTS editor-in-chief Christoph Petersen to a limited extent. There was only so much criticism of “China’s answer to the MCU”. 2 out of 5 stars.
“Donnie Yen’s Sakra” tells the well-known story of the classic wuxia literature, “Demi-gods and demi-devils”, which has been filmed many times. This revolves around Qiao Feng (Donnie Yen), who was always considered a leper in his life, which did not stop him from becoming a great martial artist. And Feng soon has to use the skills he’s acquired over the years when he falls victim to a conspiracy – and ends up doing everything he can to restore his honor.
Also: “Flash Gordon” returns to the big screen
Next Tuesday there will also be a very special appointment: Because “Flash Gordonreturns to cinemas on May 2! The legendary sci-fi classic, starring Sam J. Jones as he takes on ruthless dictator Ming (Max von Sydow) to save Earth from destruction, is part of StudioCanal’s Best of Cinema series, airing every first Tuesday. of the month, a cinema classic finds its way back to the silver screen. Next: Luc Besson’s “The Rush of the Deep” (on June 6).
Just one day later – and thus one day before the regular theatrical releases next week – the next blockbuster from Marvel awaits you: “Guardians of the Galaxy part 3begins May 3 and should then cause much joy, surprise, and heartbreak. This was already apparent from the first reviews at the end of James Gunn’s MCU trilogy:
