The brand new 4K TVs from Samsung and LG can already be ordered. As is almost always the case with the introduction of a new model, it is worth taking a look at the predecessors. This is also the case with Samsung, because the Samsung QN90B is currently cheaply available at Amazon.
Samsung QN90B: fireproof while gaming thanks to 144 Hz
The smallest representative of the QN90B series currently costs 749 euros. This ranks Amazon no less than 250 euros below the prices of the competition from MediaMarkt and Saturnus.
The special thing about the 43-inch QN90B is the screen technology, which offers a refresh rate of 144 Hz. The variant with 50 inches (127 centimeters), which is suitable for 957 euros at Amazon* supports the high frame rate, the larger Samsung models lock at 120 Hz. That makes the smaller QN90Bs especially interesting for PC gamers who also want to use their 4K TV as a PC monitor.
In addition to the high refresh rate, the QN90B scores with a very good and above all clear image, which does not correspond to the values of last year’s top model QN95B (1269 euros for 55 inches at Amazon*) comes up. Nevertheless, the Neo-QLED panel, which is illuminated by thousands of tiny mini-LEDs, convinces with high contrast, OLED-level black levels, as well as high viewing angle stability and a very good anti-reflective coating.
HDR10+ and four HDMI 2.1 inputs
In addition, the QN90B supports the HDR formats HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG, but no Dolby Vision. However, content in this format is rendered in HDR10. As a fun gimmick, the ambient mode lets you conjure up artistic images on the display and turn your 4K TV into a painting.
Four HDMI 2.1 inputs and gaming technologies such as ALLM and VRR provide the best conditions for responsive gaming with NextGen consoles such as the Playstation 5 and the Xbox Series X. If you then connect a PC with a powerful graphics card and take full advantage of the 144 Hz, the QN90B mutates at the center of your gaming room .
LG OLED C2: the best alternative to the QN90B
The almost eternal competitor of the Samsung QN90B is the LG OLED C2, which is also in the middle class in terms of price. The display on the C2s isn’t as bright as the QN90B’s panel, but the LG TV is ahead of its Samsung counterpart in terms of contrast, black value and color fidelity. But if you like using your 4K TV in daylight, the QN90B’s brightness speaks for Samsung.
Another advantage of the LG OLED C2 is the Dolby Vision support. This HDR format is much more common than HDR10+ and makes the LG TV more suitable for the masses. However, the C2 is also more expensive than the QN90B. The variant with 42 inches (107 centimeters) costs 999 euros at Amazon.
