“Avatar 2”: That’s How Much Money Disney Made With “The Way Of Water”.

Avatar: The way of the water‘ has grossed approximately $2.317 billion at the worldwide box office, making it the third highest-grossing film of all time. But how much money did Studio Disney actually make from it? After all, not all of the money made at the box office goes straight to Disney. Of course, the cinemas would rather also receive a share of the sales, if the cast and crew want to be involved, there are marketing costs and much more.

And before its theatrical release, didn’t director James Cameron explain that the sequel was “the worst deal in movie history” and had to be the third or fourth highest grossing film of all time to break even? Later, Cameron rowed back again, but mega earnings at the box office or not – the question of winning remains.

The American industry magazine the full figures viewed and calculated: Avatar: The Way Of Water has reportedly brought in $531.7 million in revenue.

From 2.3 billion to 531 million

taken into account but not just the box office result and the resulting profit, which varies widely from market to market. Disney received about 65 percent of the box office in the US, about 55 percent in the rest of the world and only 25 percent in China. The magazine also includes (estimated) sales of home cinema (DVD, Blu-ray, VoD) and television and streaming.

If you add together the revenues from cinema, home theater and television/streaming, “Avatar 2” has brought Disney even $ 1.619 billion. But of course that doesn’t take into account the costs the mammoth project devoured – which must be subtracted:

Budget of 400 million dollars

estimated a pure production budget of $400 million for “Avatar: The Way Of Water”. It takes into account both New Zealand tax benefits and costs for the partially parallel filmed sequels “Avatar 3”, “Avatar 4” and “Avatar 5”. Incidentally, this would make “Avatar 2” the 3rd most expensive movie of all time (behind “Star Wars 7” and “Star Wars 9”).

Other costs associated with “The Way Of Water” include profit sharing from the cast and crewthat are loud would amount to a proud $300 million – much of which apparently went straight to James Cameron’s bill. He has now directed three of the four most successful films of all time and has a correspondingly broad chest at the negotiating table. And producer Jon Landau would also have earned a decent amount.

The advertising for “Avatar 2” is said to have cost $ 175 million, which is actually only half of the total advertising budget. Than deliberately failed to take into account the $170 million in promotional costs borne by ad partners. After subtracting all these items comes in the calculation than on the aforementioned $ 531.7 million profit for the studio.
