A population survey by the Accident Prevention Advisory Center (BFU) showed that in the spring, 75 percent of those surveyed got together for a thorough cleaning action – spring cleaning.

Cleaning the entire house at once can get overwhelming very quickly, so it’s good to be prepared. Here are five helpful tips for stress-free spring cleaning.

1. Schedule enough time

Depending on where you live, it may be impossible to do all the spring cleaning in one day. It’s ideal to have a few days at a time so you can spread out the various tasks over the days.

On the other hand, if you’re working weekdays and cleaning is only on weekends, everything might take a little longer. Even if you want to finish the spring cleaning as quickly as possible, you should not overdo it. For example, set Saturday off as cleaning day and give yourself a break on Sunday.

2. Make a cleaning plan

If you start tidying and cleaning the entire house without a plan, it often takes longer than it should. You can avoid this by creating a cleaning schedule. On the one hand, write down which areas of your apartment or house you want to do on which day. Caution: Do not take too many things in one day.

On the other hand, you should make a list for each room, so as not to forget the special places. It is clear that you should vacuum every room, but the dirt is not so obvious everywhere.

3. The right material

Nightmare: You finally decided to start cleaning and then you don’t have the necessary materials. Whether it’s cleaning supplies, rags or accessories like ladders, you can also dust off ceilings – get ready for cleaning day to avoid unnecessary mishaps.

In Switzerland, around 39,000 people are injured each year while cleaning or cooking. These are often events that could have been avoided with the right preparation. That’s why BFU recommends that only work be done where the right material is available in the building. For example, a number of fall accidents during cleaning can be avoided by using a fixed ladder with a safety bar. Chairs or boxes are not a viable alternative to a ladder. Non-slip, closed shoes provide additional safety on the ladder.

According to the BFU, accidents involving chemical cleaners can also be avoided with appropriate protective equipment, such as gloves. If you use strong acids or alkalis, you should also wear safety glasses.

4. Provide entertainment

Cleaning isn’t exactly the most exciting activity imaginable. It helps you to have fun with your favorite entertainment program to prevent spring cleaning from being too boring. Radio, podcasts, CDs and even Netflix – the possibilities for this are endless.

5. Motivate yourself with a reward

The best part of spring cleaning is the day when everything is clean. But getting there is often so tedious that you delay the action several times before you start work. Motivate yourself with a reward so it doesn’t take too long.

Of course, it’s up to you what you want to reward yourself with. For example, order food from your favorite restaurant, buy something you’ve had your eye on for a long time, or go on a nice family trip.
