Anyone who has eyes in the head knows: Joaquin Phoenix once again plays a completely deranged man with a worrying mother complex and is not getting any younger. He’s good at it. “Joker” won him an Oscar. Director Ari Aster has now fallen so in love with Phoenix that he’s made his longest film with him to date (Aster’s “Hereditary” was 128 minutes short, his “Midsommar” was 148 minutes, and the Director’s Cut was 171 minutes long).
The 179 minute phoenix asteroid “Beau Is Afraid” can be clearly divided into 3 parts:
1 hour: BRILLIANT!!!!
two o’clock: Gugus for people who even as adults still yearn for forest kindergarten.
3rd hour: Oedipal Birchermuesli.
Particularly noteworthy: An animated giant penis on the floor of the mother, which amazingly resembles Heidi Klum’s earthworm Halloween costume and correspondingly indicates severe damage in the upper room of all involved.
Conclusion: Almost incredulous gratitude for the first hour. What hypercrazy ideas to illustrate the raging paranoia of Beau Wassermann, a middle-aged man with a most childlike mind! Fantastic! You can then give the movie another half hour, after that it’s better to escape, because that’s how you remember a masterpiece, otherwise just something that interestingly fails. But one must say: Til Schweiger doesn’t even reach the level of Ari Aster’s failure at its highest point. The difference with the genius of the first hour is so tragic.
“Beau Is Afraid” will be in cinemas from April 27.
