Episode 8 of Season 3 is already the last episode of the current “The Mandalorian” season – now it’s time for fans of Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu: Waiting for Season 4, for which showrunner Jon Favreau has already written the script, but there is no official information about the start of shooting (reportedly autumn 2023). But actually we should now say: Din Djarin and DIN Grogu!
Because in the season finale, Grogu got a new name — and finally, officially, a new father. For Din Djarin adopted Grogu in front of the assembled Mandalorians. In the hearts of fans, of course, he has long since, Grogu is often referred to as his son or child in “The Mandalorian” Season 3. The official step has now been taken for Grogu to go from foundling to Mandalorian apprentice. Still unable to speak and swear the oath, a parent must give Grogu permission to be officially apprenticed to Din Djarin – and so Din Djarin quickly closed the sack, calling the former “Baby Yoda”. .
Din Grogu is now officially Din Djarin’s son
But that also comes with a name change for Grogu: as the gunsmith (Emily Swallow) reveals at the ceremony, the little one is now called Din Grogu. This raises questions about Din Djarin’s name: isn’t Din his first name, but his last name? That would be possible, but with Bo-Katan Kryze or Paz Vizsla, for example, the last name is the family name, so it doesn’t seem to be common for Mandalorians to use the first name and then the last name.
We can’t quite understand the naming just yet. At first glance, Grogu Djarin would make a bit more sense to us. But since Din Djarin himself is a foundling, it could also be that where he comes from, the surname actually comes first and he kept his birth name in that order even when he became a Mandalorian.
And what about the helmet?
The answer to the question of why Grogu still doesn’t have to wear a helmet, even though he has changed from foundling to student, seems a little clearer. We suspect that he would have to recite the Mandalorian Creed himself and his father’s approval, though elevating him in rank, does not fully bind him to The Way. Besides, Grogu without a helmet and Din Djarin with a helmet will also work for the future further conflict potential for Din Djarin’s beliefs: why does he keep covering his face if his son doesn’t?
By the way, that’s not the only implication we can glean from the Season 3 finale for Season 4. Admittedly, the final episode didn’t really leave much open. Contrary to expectations, there was also no post-credits scene, the announcement of another spin-off like back then with The Book of Boba Fett or something like that. Din (can you still call him that now?) and Grogu have moved their house to Nevarro happy, content and initially without major enemies – after all, Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) is dead, where: keyword clones…
Grogu is Mando’s apprentice in Season 4
But before that, Din Djarin has found Carson Teva (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee) and told him that he will accept assignments for the New Republic in the future, in complete silence, of course. So he’s sort of an unofficial ranger for the New Republic now – which could also be a reference to the upcoming “Rangers Of The New Republic” spin-off.
Din Djarin’s choice of path is directly related to the change in Grogu’s life: Grogu not only has a new name, but also a father, and he takes his duties very seriously. With Grogu in his care and training, Din Djarin is no longer willing to take up too shady jobs as a bounty hunter. It also means that Grogu will no longer be just Din Djarin’s appendage in Season 4. He is now in training to become a Mandalorian, so he will likely be trained primarily in combat in the future.
Will Din Djarin and Grogu take on Thrawn?
That Din Djarin has now officially (or unofficially…) joined the New Republic, also means that in season 4 he is directly involved in the events surrounding Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Michaelsen) can be withdrawn, who will emerge as an Imperial threat to the Republic in the Mandoverse-based series Star Wars: Ahsoka, coming to Disney+ in August 2023.
But: Since Din Djarin only wants to take individual orders, it is also possible that in the future (as was already the case in season 3) in further seasons of “The Mandalorian” we will not only follow Din Djarin’s story, but also through other Mandalorians like Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff) – and Din Djarin only shows up when one of his current adventures has him cross paths with the other protagonists again. So far, of course, this is pure speculation. One thing is certain: his son will be by his side.
