Mauritius can be considered a year-round destination – depending on what you want to do on the island. Of each September to November and from April to June it is not that hot and relatively dry. January to March is considered the rainy season: it is hot, stuffy and it rains eight to ten days a month. Despite the rainy season, December and January are the high season in Mauritius.

The coolest months are June to August, lying on the beach in a bikini may not be possible every day as the average temperature is approx. 20°C lies. The water also recharges with approx. 21°C only conditionally for bathing. In general, however, the west and north are warmer and less windy. When in doubt, choose a hotel in the northwest. Those who come to Mauritius for surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing will find the best waves and winds on the southwest coast from May to October.

Of course, the pearl in the Indian Ocean is perfect for a relaxing beach holiday. In the lively north, for example, you can go on the beaches Big Bay, Mont Choisy, Trou aux Biches or Bain Bouf relaxed. In Bain Boeuf you can enjoy the wonderful view of Coin de Mire and the tranquility, while in Grand Baie, for example, there is much more to experience and you can also eat well at the countless street food stalls.

In Mauritius, all beaches are public and especially on Sundays and public holidays, the beach is also the place-to-be for the local population. Then there is an exuberant party atmosphere and the beaches can get a bit crowded, but you can experience the diverse culture up close. The longest beach in Mauritius is located in the west Flick and Flac. Here you will find the best swimming and water sports conditions. If you’re looking for action in the West, you’ll find it in tamarin its lucky, as here the offshore protective reef is briefly interrupted, leading to excellent surfing conditions. You can enter in the east Belle Mare or Blue bay swimming and if you want to go on an excursion, you will find your swimming happiness at Ile aux Cerf.

The capital of Mauritius is the economic, political and cultural center of the island. If you don’t just want to see white beaches and blue water during your holiday, then you should definitely visit the city. The Central Market is the place to be if you want to experience the diversity of Mauritius up close. Whether fruit, vegetables, meat, fish or souvenirs and spices – you can buy everything here. Those looking for designer clothes, jewelery and watches will find what they are looking for at the Caudan Waterfront, which starts right on the harbour.

Worth a trip: Port Louis, the capital of the island.

The largest shopping center on the island is located just outside Port Louis and is easily reached by taxi. Everything you need or could need can be found at Bagatelle Mall. By May to November also take place every weekend horse race – Champs de Mars is the oldest racecourse in the southern hemisphere. A popular party atmosphere guaranteed on the Saturdays of the races!

The small village Chamarel in the southwest of the island is definitely worth a visit and you can easily spend a whole day here and visit the various sights. There is the rum distillery, where you will learn during a tour how rum is made from green sugar cane and of course taste the many different types. To what extent it might be a good idea not to visit the rum distillery with a rental car, let’s stick to that.

The Black River Gorges National Park is also worth a visit with the Gorges Viewpoint. The visitor gets a beautiful view over the green canopy of the national park to the turquoise sea. In Chamarel You can marvel at the impressive waterfall and the seven-colored earth, which shines more or less intensely depending on the time of day and weather conditions.

Located just outside Port Louis, you can also relax with a stroll through the oldest botanic garden in the southern hemisphere. The garden is known for its huge water lilies and water lilies. In addition, it also offers a wide variety of spices, ebony trees, sugar cane and about 85 different species of palm trees from all over the world. The park can be explored independently or with a guide for a fee.

To the south, the Le Morne peninsula awaits you with its mountain «Le Morne Brabant». The 556 meter high rock can be climbed in about 3 hours and anyone who reaches the summit cross will be rewarded with a spectacular 360° view over the turquoise blue lagoons of Mauritius.

While the first part of the ascent starts gently in the shadow of the forest and is still relatively easy, slippers are a thing of the past from the second half on. There the path gets steeper and you sometimes have to climb up with your hands on basalt and ropes. The mountain used to be a refuge for slaves, but “Le Morne Brabant” has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2006 and is also known as Le Morne Cultural Landscape.
