What should a cream contain to smooth wrinkles? A dermatologist explains.

Collagen powder mixed into drinks is said to fight wrinkles by stimulating the body’s own collagen production. Some studies show that the body actually absorbs industrially produced collagen in powder form. However, like all proteins, it breaks down into separate components during digestion. It is unclear whether the body can use them to build the body’s own collagen. “There are currently no long-term clinical studies proving the anti-aging effect of collagen powder,” says dermatologist Daniela Kleeman, 55, of Zurich. It recommends the use of proven active ingredients. And sun protection!

retinol

“Of all the anti-aging ingredients found in the cosmetic industry, retinol is the most effective,” says Kleeman. Various studies show that when used regularly, retinol stimulates collagen production after two to three months and accelerates the skin renewal process that softens fine lines. Retinol also removes dead skin cells. “This makes the skin thinner but also more sensitive,” says Kleeman. Therefore, a cream containing 0.5 or 1 percent retinol should initially be used only once a week in the evening, and then gradually increase in frequency.

A cream containing hyaluronic acid is especially effective for dry skin.

hyaluronic acid

This active ingredient has water binding properties. “Creams or serums containing hyaluronic acid are therefore particularly good at moisturizing dry skin,” says Kleeman. It softens fine lines and plumps the skin. “However, deep wrinkles cannot be removed with cream.” In order for hyaluronic acid to work in the lower layers of the skin, it must be injected by the dermatologist with a syringe. The treatment only works temporarily for about 8 to 12 months.

C vitamin

“The effect of vitamin C in skin care products has also been scientifically proven,” says Kleeman. Serums containing vitamin C have an antioxidant effect. This means they scavenge free radicals. These are created by UV rays as well as pollutants such as exhaust gases or cigarette smoke. By neutralizing free radicals, vitamin C can protect the skin from the aging process. In addition, vitamin C inhibits the formation of melanin, which can inhibit the development of age spots, also known as age spots.

According to the expert, sunscreen is a must in summer and is recommended on gray days.

It’s crucial to use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 every day, from spring to fall, according to Kleeman. He recommends applying sunscreen every day if possible, even in winter. This is the cheapest and best way to prevent wrinkles and skin cancer. There are sunscreens that act as moisturizers and day creams. Important: Sunscreen should contain a combination of UVA and UVB filters. UVB rays tan the top layer of skin and can cause skin cancer. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin and promote the formation of free radicals. These molecules damage the DNA of cells, which can lead to wrinkles as well as skin cancer.
