Bad Bunny used his Coachella 2023 performance this Friday night to respond to the criticism he’s received over the past two weeks, particularly after ambiguously referring to racism in the reggaeton industry in an interview with Time magazine.
“IN social networks, Everything is said in the press, but it will never be known reality what the heart feels. (…) That’s why I tell you not to believe what you don’t see coming out of my mouth. (…) Whoever wants to really meet me, I invite him to my house”, said “El Conejo Malo” from the main stage of Coachella.
The speech he continued with the applause of the public and which, intermittently, he supplemented with the assurance that “people” think they know the “life of celebrities”, but they “don’t know” what they feel and how they feel live.
“You’ll never know me through Instagram, you’ll never know me through video viral on TikTok, You will never get to know me through an interview, the message has changed,” said the determined Puerto Rican who was at the center of all criticism for days after his statements to Time.
During an interview in an American weekly, Benito Martinez Ocasioby the artist’s real name, he was asked if he believes that elements of race and color can determine the success of an urban artist or a reggaeton player.
To which the Latin star replied yes, since it’s his “ignorance”, he couldn’t talk much about it because he didn’t “experience it personally”.
“I can’t say yes or no because I don’t live it. Nor did I see with my own eyes that this person did not become more successful because of his skin. I haven’t seen it and it would be irresponsible of me to say yes,” he said. Bad Bunny after starring in the first cover of a historical magazine entirely in Spanish.
The singer then set an example for his compatriot Tego Calderonan African-American pioneer in reggaeton whom he defined as one of his “idols” and who, although respected by everyone in the genre, never reached the level of popularity of “El Conejo Malo”.
Namely, he was one of the artists he mentioned during his concert at Coachella, a renowned music festival in the USA that takes place this weekend, and the next in the Californian desert.
With his performance, the Puerto Rican paid tribute to those who opened the door to Caribbean rhythm for him in the United States with a dedication to his roots in which he mentioned Héctor Lavoe, Tito Puente and Celia Cruz and Daddy Yankee and Calderón himself, among others.
Bad Bunny – Post Malone
Bad Bunny demonstrated his versatility on stage coachella with elaborate choreography, visual effects and even fireworks.
One of the most praised moments was when he uploaded other artists from the urban scene such as Ñengo Flow, Jowell & Randy or Jhay Cortez.
But the biggest anecdote was created when the American rapper Post Malone appeared on the scene with a guitar, with which he unsuccessfully tried to interpret the acoustic version of the songs “La Canción” and “Yonaguni”.
If the instrument has not failed, the micro of Puerto Rican. This contributed to the hilarious disconnect and lack of understanding between the English one and the Spanish one which ended in a hug between laughs.
“I teach Spanish Post Malone, teaches me English. He understands everything I tell him,” the Latin artist joked before dismissing the American.
