After Dwayne Johnson failed in the cinema: now comes a new edition of “Baywatch” as a series

As Deadline first found out, a reboot of the cult series “Baywatch” is in the works. The Fremantle media company would have its hands full trying to find a suitable broadcaster or streaming service to get the red bathing suits back on and off the beach. It will become clear in the coming days whether something is really going on.

It is not yet known who will be active in front of or behind the camera in the “Baywatch” reboot, but it is likely that they will make an honest effort here not to crash again as they did in 2017. It was there that the movie “Baywatch” was released, which had a pretty high-class cast that included Dwayne Johnson, Alexandra Daddario and Zac Efron. In the end, however, the lifeguard comedy failed to convince the critics and failed to impress at the box office either. Baywatch 2 considerations were quickly buried.

Back in 2018, Bob McCourt, Frementle’s top manager of all operations, talked about the fact that a “Baywatch” reboot could certainly be a problem. However, due to the failure of the cinema film, these plans had to be put on hold. In any case, the legacy is great, which would be addressed with the new edition, because “Baywatch” is probably one of the most iconic series of the 80s and 90s.

Originally, “Baywatch” was discontinued after the first season, only to start again in 1991 with season 2. Eight more seasons followed, with the final season no longer accompanying the everyday life of the lifeguards in Malibu, but – as the title suggests makes it clear – if “Baywatch Hawaii” got a new plot. In addition, “Baywatch” was responsible for making Pamela Anderson (from season 3) famous and for extending David Hasselhoff’s fame even further.
