Tomatoes from Morocco, strawberries from Spain – mostly from the greenhouse. Vegetables and fruits often have a longer way to go and need to be heavily watered until they wait for us at the supermarket, packaged in plastic. Growing your own vegetables – or at least some of them seasonal, organic and absolutely fresh – is very easy. You don’t need a green finger or a big garden for that: Blick climbs into bed and takes you dear readers with him. For this we placed three raised beds on the roof of the Ringier building. For the second time throughout the season, garden expert Scarlet Allenspach will guide you step-by-step.
Now is the perfect time to start. The planting plan guides you through the gardening season month-to-month so you can keep track of when or what to plant. Potatoes, lettuce, celery, garlic, carrots, kohlrabi, edible flowers, onions, rhubarb, radishes, spinach, types of cabbage, chard, dill and much more can be planted already in April. More southern plants like cherry tomatoes, hot peppers or eggplant are grown indoors and only go outside when temperatures are warmer. Sometimes you can harvest in May: for example, radishes or edible flowers.
