If you really feel like going to the cinema again this Thursday, don’t wait any longer and hurry to your trusted cinema. because this week several movies are starting that are worth watching.
In addition to a crazy horror comedy about a bear on coke (“Cocaine Bear”), we can also expect a touching anime highlight (“Suzume”) and a classic cloak-and-dollar adventure as a large-scale German-French production. in two parts (“The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan”)!
“Suzume”
It is not often that anime films are shown in the Berlinale Competition. In 2002, “Chihiro’s journey to the magical land” won the Golden Bear – more than 20 years later “suzumeanother anime movie in competition. And even if he didn’t take home the coveted prize, Makoto Shinkai’s poetic adventure was well received and is now starting in German cinemas across the country.
The blockbuster anime from “Your Name” and “Weathering With You” director Makoto Shinkai also managed a strong 4-star rating in the FILMSTARTS review:
“Even in ‘Your Name’ and ‘Weathering With You’, natural disasters played an important role. In his new film “Suzume”, the title heroine travels to abandoned scenes of previous accidents in order to prevent new disasters there. anime blockbuster that is as moving as it is visually stunning and, despite its serious background, incredibly optimistic and funny.
“Cocaine Bear”
A bear on coke running amok in a wildlife park? The absurd idea of ”Cocaine Bearis based – at least in part – on a true story, but the black bear who used a duffel bag full of cocaine died of an overdose in the mid-1980s, while his movie equivalent was surrounded by walkers in the park, police officers and evil mobsters can terrorize and can can’t get enough of the white powder. The result is – at least in the opinion of our chief critic Christoph Petersen – an entertaining pleasure, for which there are at least 3 out of 5 stars:
“’Cocaine Bear’ does what the title promises! If you’re attracted to the idea of a killer bear sniffing cocaine, don’t miss a visit to the cinema – preferably with like-minded friends and one or two alcoholic drinks.”
“The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan”
Few stories have been filmed as often as Alexandre Dumas’ literary classic The Three Musketeers. Of “The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan“ the next adaptation of the novel awaits us, this time as a large-scale German-French production in two parts, which is a cross between a dark reboot and a light-hearted action adventure. FILMSTARTS reviewer Sidney Schering spread in his criticism solid 3 stars for the start of the and despite minor weaknesses, is already looking forward to “The Three Musketeers: Milady”, which is already available at December 14, 2023 starts in cinemas:
“’The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan’ falls a bit between the seats despite the powerful action sequences. Nevertheless, our anticipation for the second part “The Three Musketeers: Milady” remains unbroken: Eva Green is simply very good as a deceiving seductress, and since the more familiar elements of the original were largely worked out in the first film, we can put them in the definitely expect a surprise or two in the second half.”
“The Fox”
And another little cinema tip on the side. After the Oscar winner, “Nothing New in the West” is now followed by another film with a similar theme, much calmer but no less haunting: the German-Austrian production “The FoxWhile not based on a world-renowned literary source, the story is based on the real life experiences and memories of Adrian Goiginger’s great-grandfather, the film’s director and screenwriter. In our MOVIE STARTS review we award 4 out of 5 stars and come to the following conclusion:
“From the moving story of his great-grandfather, who as a soldier in the war year 1940 befriended a fox, director Adrian Goiginger creates a morally clairvoyant parable about separation and connection and the value of humanity in inhuman times.”
