Master Yoda trains youngsters – in the animated series”The Adventures of the Young Jedi‘, which will launch on Disney+ on May 4, 2023, the so-called ‘Star Wars’ day. The new series is mainly aimed at preschoolers. But after watching the first two episodes at Star Wars Celebration 2023 in London, we can confirm that even Star Wars-crazy parents should enjoy the kids’ adventures.
Star Wars: The Adventures of the Young Jedi follows young boys Lys Solay (voice: Juliet Donenfeld), Kai Brightstar (Jamaal Avery Jr.), and koala-like Nubs (Dee Bradley Baker) who live in a Jedi temple to get trained on Tenoo and befriends talented young pilot Nash Durango (Emma Berman). One of their teachers is “Star Wars” legend Yoda (Piotr Michael) – and from him they learn not only how to use the Force, but also something about life and the meaning of friendship.
A series for kids – covering the entire “Star Wars” spectrum
Because the series should not only be about exciting adventures and fun, but always convey an educational message for the little ones. It’s about helpfulness, self-confidence and team spirit – but also a lot about typical “Star Wars” elements, as we know them from the films and series for adults. Because that was showrunner Michael Olson and producer James Waugh talking at the Star Wars Celebration about “Young Jedi Adventures“, as the series is called in the original, spoke particularly important.

“This is ‘Star Wars’! We’re not holding anything back!” stated the creators of the series on the “Young Jedi” panel – there is action, lightsaber battles, droids, aliens and adventures in the series, prepared only in a way suitable for children. After watching the first two episodes of the series, we can confirm that. Indeed, there’s no skimping on Jedi action and lightsaber duels either the animation looks very nice, colorful and detailed – the series is made for children, but according to our first impression it is not children’s stuff.
Colorful look and lots of “Star Wars” messages
If you want to show your kids “The Adventures of the Young Jedi”, as a “Star Wars” fan you should definitely get your money’s worth. Michael Olson and James Waugh made sure of that, because they did the series is specially made for ‘Star Wars’ fans who want to introduce their children to this world – the creators of the series meet this criterion themselves, they are fans and have children. Young Jedi Lys was even inspired by the daughter of the series creator, he revealed.

And so the children in the new series not only learn important messages about life, but also something about “Star Wars”: For example, that it is not called a lightsaber, but a lightsaber (“Lasersword” vs. “Lightsaber” in the original version of episode 1), and that Yoda is the greatest Jedi master of all time. Fan parents should probably nod diligently while watching. And of course, universal themes like friendship and solidarity have always been part of the Star Wars universe.
Scene Thief Nubs, voiced by Dee Bradley Baker
Incidentally, when it comes to cuteness, Grogu has competition from the blue, fuzzy Jedi Nubs. His spokesperson Dee Bradley Baker (who, by the way, also speaks all the animated clone troopers and thus the entire “The Bad Batch” in the “Star Wars” universe) came as a surprise guest on the panel – and gave a taste of his “Nubs language”, i.e. the sounds who makes the little scene thief. Like Chewbacca, he doesn’t speak English, but everyone understands him, as Dee Bradley Baker confirmed.
In Episode 1 of The Adventures of the Young Jedi, the Jedi force first meets Pilot Nash, before detouring together to a village exploited by a pirate. Together they confront the pirate and take back the residents’ property. In Episode 2, the group then takes part in a race including one of Nash’s competitors, whose skills the young pilot is initially jealous of. But in the end, of course, the children help each other – here too there is a learning message and the adventure moves quickly, but seems child-friendly and appropriately exciting to us.
The High Republic – coming soon to adult fans in “The Acolyte”
By the way, “The Adventures of the Young Jedi” is set in the time of the High Republic, a time before the events of “Star Wars: Episode I” when the Jedi were at the height of their power. This time there will also be a live-action series coming up, which will then be aimed at adults: “Star Wars: The Acolyte“. The first trailer of this series was only shown to the audience at the Star Wars Celebration. Even more By the way, there are impressions from the Star Wars Celebration here on Instagram.
